Patriot Power Generator 1200 makes off-grid camping and RV life a breeze

The solar-powered sidekick that keeps your campsite powered

Adventure can turn into inconvenience at the campsite without access to an outlet. From dying phones to lukewarm food, comfort can fade fast when you don’t have reliable power. I like the option of off-grid camping while having amenities at hand, and tried the Patriot Power Generator 1200.

In summary, the device can power everything you need while outdoors, thanks to its large battery capacity and pass-through technology, which allows you to regenerate power while charging your essential gear. Here’s my experience with the device, when to use it, and how worthy it is of a space in your camping setup.

Why this generator matters for modern camping

The Patriot Power Generator 1200 strikes a balance between power and minimalism. I found it as easy to use as a portable power bank, with minimal setup time, perfect for busy campers setting up their site. I needed a generator that was light and compact enough to fit in the car and move freely around the campsite. This model is easy for me to lift with its ergonomic handle, weighing in at 28 pounds.

While you may picture enlisting a generator for unexpected home emergencies, there are plenty of uses for an off-grid experience, including the following accessories that operate safely within the generator’s 1200-watt limit:

  • Powering your electric cooler or fridge
  • Running a fan or small heater
  • Cooking food on an electric griddle or portable grill
  • Charging laptops, cameras, drones, and phones
  • Keeping lanterns, flashlights, and string lights charged between evenings
  • Inflating air beds, boats, tubes, and tires
  • Entertainment via projectors, sound systems, and speakers
  • Recharging e-bikes
  • Brewing coffee or tea

In addition to traditional camping, the Patriot Power Generator 1200 is a viable solution for an RV setup without on-site hookups. It’s not a complete electrical replacement, but it can power essentials like lighting or a 12-volt fridge, keeping basics in order if you’re parked off-grid.

Performance, limits, and whether you should buy

After testing the Patriot Power Generator 1200, I’m most impressed by its ease of use. I naturally associate “powerful” with “complicated”, but the generator’s design and user experience are very intuitive, and I was able to test almost all of its features without the user manual’s help. It’s a helpful and comprehensive text for learning how to read outputs and specifications, but it’s also a straightforward device to get up and running quickly.

Upon unboxing, I tested the generator with my electric cooler and portable projector, and both devices took seconds to set up and held a charge for an entire day of use. It’s very quiet and has a stable connection with a predictable wattage output.

The generator charges fully in an hour when plugged into the wall and holds 80% of its charge for a year when stored. It also comes with a 100-watt folding solar panel that’s sleek and fits easily in a car. When connected, it takes approximately six to eight hours to reach a full charge on a sunny day; however, this may take significantly longer in cloudy or shady conditions.

My favorite feature is the Patriot Power Generator 1200’s pass-through technology, which allows the generator to charge via an outlet or solar panel while powering other devices. When placing the solar panel at the right angle on a clear day, it can run endlessly while powering a handful of camping accessories.

The LED screen displays the remaining battery level, featuring a curved bar and percentage, making it easy to check your power at a glance. It also shows the generator’s input and output, allowing you to see how quickly it’s draining or charging.  There are two AC outlets, two USB-A ports, and two USB-C ports located below the screen, as well as a 12V DC automotive outlet.

So is the Patriot Power Generator 1200 the right fit for your camping adventures? It may be too heavy for backpacking or heavy-duty appliances, but it’s powerful enough to charge every gadget I bring on camping trips. I recommend the generator for van lifers, weekend campers, road trippers, and RV regulars. It can serve as a handy backup and a front runner for smaller devices, making your trips smoother without the bulk.
