Although there’s no doubt that Luxottica’s most popular brands include Oakley and Ray-Ban, Persol has the support of elite celebrity endorsements. From making a statement in the hands of Steve McQueen to becoming a personal favorite of Anthony Bourdain, Persol has graced the screens and red carpets on numerous occasions. One of the brand’s most iconic models, the 649 frames, has maintained its traditional shape for the past 70 years, despite its iterations and spin-offs. And like many brands, Persol’s persistence has paid off, with the 649 frames becoming one of their most notorious styles. However, now Persol is adding a small but impactful upgrade to its iconic shades, turning them into a cooler, moodier version.
Persol upgrades the 649 shades with subtlety and elegance

Upgraded for greater comfort and durability, the 649 glasses have undergone a makeover that enhances the traditional silhouette with subtle details. This revamp retains the model’s essence while bringing it into a new era. Featuring new flexibility in key areas like the temples and bridge, the latest version of the 649 shades is made to last. The glasses also feature a new, darkened, ultra-resistant, high-performance material that the brand states is more durable than the existing metal. Persol’s iconic hinges have been darkened, giving the entire model a sleek and black look.
Without the contrasting metal hinges, the 649 Total Black Arrow shades provide a low-key, understated look that still has a classic feel. The new black frame comes with the option of polarized smoky blue lenses or transparent green lenses. Also available is a slightly darkened version of the tortoiseshell print, made famous by McQueen and Bourdain. The new 649 Total Black Arrow frames are available only in the 54mm lens size and are in stock via Persol’s webstore and Luxottica retailers for a range of $418 to $545, depending on the lens selection.
