The Filson x Freeman raincoat is back, now lined with Mackinaw wool

Two Seattle outerwear makers just dropped their warmest collab raincoat yet.

Seattle is a city that calls for a little bit more than a light umbrella, so it makes sense that two of its best-known clothing brands keep teaming up on raincoats.

Freeman and Filson, both based in the city, just released the Filson x Freeman Mackinaw Wool Lined Raincoat, the latest version of a collaboration the two started in 2023.

The coat is built on Freeman’s signature raincoat, a trim, hooded design that Scott and Brittany Freeman first made in their Capitol Hill apartment 15 years ago. Freeman still sews it in Seattle.

This version uses Filson’s 8-ounce Oil Finish Cover Cloth for the shell. It’s a waxed cotton that keeps shedding water as long as you rewax it every so often.

The torso and hood are lined with Filson’s 24-ounce Mackinaw wool, the same heavy wool used in many of the brand’s classic jackets and vests.

The hand-warmer pockets and inside chest pocket get Filson’s brushed cotton Guide Flannel, and the sleeves are lined with a lighter cotton so the coat slides on over a sweater.

I’ve watched this collab get a little more Filson every round, but it’s never stopped being a Freeman coat.

The first round, in 2023, paired Filson’s waxed Cover Cloth with a flannel lining. The second, released for the 2024 holidays, swapped in 18-ounce Seattle Wool.

Mackinaw is the logical next step. It’s the dense wool behind Filson’s Mackinaw Cruiser, probably the most recognizable thing the company makes, and it turns this from a rain shell into an actual winter coat.

That’s a fair trade for Seattle, where winter means weeks of cold drizzle more than snow. It also means this isn’t the three-season jacket the original Freeman is; a waxed shell with a wool body and hood is a lot of coat for a 55-degree day.

Either way, Filson gets its signature fabrics into a slimmer silhouette it doesn’t make itself, and Freeman, a small shop that still sews its coats just south of downtown, gets its raincoat in front of Filson’s much bigger audience. If you’re building out a cold-weather rotation, here’s a good place to start.
