With the new year approaching, we’re taking a look back through the past 11 months at records that did not get coverage in New Music Monday when they were first released earlier this year. This week it’s Cashmere, the debut LP from Swet Shop Boys.

2016 has been a dark year, and much of its highly acclaimed much has matched that tone with brooding, gothic records. Cashmere, however, flies in the face of that trend. The album is filled with energy, drawing from Qawwali hand claps, harmonium, Bollywood string drama, sitar, Western synths, and an arsenal of drums – from 808s to tablas and tars, dholaks and doumbeks.

For all the brightness and energy in its music, Cashmere is a charged album. The duo of Heems (formerly of Das Racist) and Riz MC (a.k.a. Riz Ahmed of The Night Of and Nightcrawler) utilize producer Redinho’s soundtrack for songs like their single “T5,” where the emcees lament the discrimination they face as they amass frequent flyer miles while traveling the world for work.

According to the official logline: “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”

What do the SAG and DGA nominations mean for the Oscars?
'Wicked' led the SAG nominations, but was snubbed by the DGAs
Ralph Fiennes in Conclave.

Two of the most high-profile awards bodies in Oscars season unveiled their nominees today, giving us a firmer sense of which movies are likely to become Oscar frontrunners. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are an actor-oriented ceremony, but their membership has major overlap with the Academy. The Directors Guild Awards (DGAs), meanwhile, give us a sense of which directors might wind up nominated for Best Director.

The SAG nominations turned out to be particularly good for Wicked, which received nominations for three of its actors and its ensemble and its stunt performers for a total of five nominations. A Complete Unknown was just behind it with four, including an ensemble nod and three acting nods, and Anora, Conclave, and Emilia Perez rounded out the best ensemble lineup.
