The Black Tux – Overhauling the Tux Rental Market (with Surfers)

Wet Suits from The Black Tux on Vimeo.

This may be the most mind blowing concept since social media. Yep, that big. You will understand if you have ever been in a wedding and you had to rent a tuxedo. It really is the depths of depression. Last time I had to rent one (even though I own one, I had to match everyone else) I nearly cried. I looked at the guy at Men’s Warehouse and said, “Would you wear this in public?” He just slumped and shook his head. We have had no choice since time began. We just sucked it up and waddled about in the flammable, sweaty, ill fitting suit. Take note: We also felt sorry for the brides who spent life fortunes on dresses only to see the groomsmen float by in pants fit for a harem and shoulder pads made for football.

Without further ado I present you with The Black Tux. Following the example of Warby Parker they have cut out the middle man and offer clients high end suits for about $95.

Think Super 150s Merino Wool, classic and slim fits, leather shoes and a variety of accessories to pair. The tie page in itself is just damn brilliant. And yes, they even offer Converse high tops as a shoe option.  Salivating yet? It gets better – The Black Tux ships anywhere in the US, your order arrives a week before your event and you send it back the day after your event. Free shipping too. Wipe them eyes!

I’m sure you are worried about the measurements. They thought of that too. You can go by their sizing chart (they have standard US sizes), get measured by a tailor or they provide a guide to measure yourself at home. And if for some reason the tux doesn’t fit properly you can send it back to them for alterations or take it to a tailor and they will take care of the costs. They are just that good. And take comfort in knowing your suit hasn’t been worn by one gazillion guys. Most companies rent their tuxes nearly 100 times, Black Tux rents less than half that amount of times.

And since this is a Feel Good Friday post, you better believe they are do gooders. A percentage of profits goes towards helping homeless and low-income individuals get back on their feet through the Chrysalis organization. They also donate gently used suits to the company for individuals to wear for interviews or to retain employment.

Men around America rejoice. The rental tux you knew and hated is dead. Long live The Black Tux.

Recently, the Black Tux teamed up with pro surfers Nick Rosza, Luke Davis, Chase Wilson, and Matt McCabe, alongside Byrd Hairdo Products and photographer Steven Lippman to tell a visual story about doing what you love on your own terms. Shot in Malibu, each surfer can be seen wearing a curated look from The Black Tux’s current line of tuxedo-rental options. In support of the collaboration, every tuxedo rented from The Black Tux during the month of August will ship with a free tin of one of Byrd’s original pomades.
