Tullamore D.E.W. Celebrates Its New Distillery

On September 17th, we joined Tullamore D.E.W. for a private tasting at The Penny Farthing in NYC to celebrate the opening of their brand new, $50 million distillery in their hometown of Tullamore, Ireland. The milestone marked the return of whiskey production to the town 60 years after the original closed its doors.

“This new distillery brings Tullamore D.E.W. back to its origins,” Tim Herlihy, Tullamore D.E.W. National Brand Ambassador, said. “We are incredibly proud of the Tullamore Distillery and know its opening has been awaited with great anticipation. We look forward to building on our success to date and helping new fans all around the world discover the magic of Tullamore D.E.W.”

We descended into The Penny Farthing’s private cellar to begin the tasting, led by Herlihy himself. In front of us were the three types of Irish whiskeys – pot still, malt and grain – that are combined to create Tullamore D.E.W.’s smooth yet complex triple distilled blend. After trying each component individually, we were encouraged to mix the three in a glass to create our own recipe. It was incredible to get a small idea of how many years of work goes into creating the perfect blend for a spirit as smooth as Tullamore.

The new distillery is a wonderful piece of work, featuring four hand-crafted copper stills, six brewhouse fermenters with a 34,000 liter capacity each and warehouse storage for 100,000 casks. Drawing natural Irish water from the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the distillery is capable of producing 1.5 million cases of Tullamore D.E.W. annually. That’s a lot of whiskey.

How to make The Last Word cocktail, a gin classic from another era
Impress your guests and make this circa 1916 drink
Last Word cocktail

Gin often plays a prominent role within classic cocktail culture. Such is the case with The Last Word cocktail, a delightful green concoction enlivened by the aromatic clear spirit. It's a cocktail that has practically lived two lives: one as it was born during the heyday of early 20th-century American bar life and another that started about two decades ago.

How did it come about? Drinks folklore says The Last Word was devised by Frank Fogarty at the Detroit Athletic Club circa 1916. Oddly enough, Fogarty was not a bartender but an award-winning vaudeville comedian. Regardless of his progression, he came up with a damn good cocktail that uses some rather obscure ingredients.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Pinot Grigio, the perfect sipping wine
Be careful with this one, it's almost too easy to drink.
White wine

If ever there was a perfect sipping wine, Pinot Grigio would have to be it. Bright and crisp, fresh and lively, refreshing and clean, Pinot Grigio is arguably one of the most dangerously easy wines to drink. Also known also as Pinot Gris, depending on where you are in the world, this wine is citrusy and pleasantly acidic with a short finish that won't overpower a dish.

Pinot Grigio's diversity is wonderfully wide. It can become something truly artistic and beautiful or, simply, a blissfully cheerful and pleasant picnic wine. So, if you're looking for a great bottle to pack along on a day trip with a blanket and a wicker basket full of charcuterie, Pinot Grigio is your best bet.
Are Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris the same wine?
