Trekking: The Nubé 2.0 is a lofted, 3-season delight

Man isn’t meant to stay indoors — our weekly “Trekking” column can attest to that. It’s a column dedicated to the adventurer inside of all of us, the one pining to ditch the office humdrum for a quick surf session or seven-week jaunt in the Grand Tetons. One day we may highlight an ultra-light stove and the next a set of handmade canoe paddles. Life doesn’t just happen inside the workplace, so get outside and live it.

“High and mighty” isn’t a phrase we typically associate with camping, or at least not the equipment we use to do so. It is applicable when talking about the lightweight Nubé 2.0 Hammock Shelter ($275) though, particularly when you consider that the 3-pound package is designed take you directly from the forest floor and into the leaf-peppered throngs of the canopy itself (ladder not included).

nube-hammock-tentThe three-in-one tent isn’t revolutionary, but does refine some of the more desirable components you often find with lofted dwellings. The waterproof structure and vaulted frame make use of a bundled tarp that’s designed to thwart any potential downpours you might encounter in the backcountry, while an optional floor allows you to pitch the shelter on the ground like a traditional tent should you find your campsite to be relatively void of worthy trees. A built-in storage compartment on the bottom also lets you keep your gear close at hand, so you can elevate and protect up to 100 pounds of equipment with little to no fuss. Assorted colors just for the fun.

Other hallmarks include the packaged bug netting — which envelops the hammock to successfully keep out mosquitoes, ticks, gnats, and other unwanted insects — and the structure’s compatibility with both Sierra Madre camping hammocks and those of other brands. Need another incentive? The company has even pledged to provide clean water for one person in Honduras for a year with each Nubé 2.0 sold. It’s a win-win.

Check out Sierra Madre Research online for more information, or to browse the company’s small selection of hammocks and other gear.
