While Honda is a household name for many reasons, building futuristic electric travel trailers isn’t one of them. Now, the iconic automaker is looking to change that with the debut of its all-new Base Station concept.

While Honda lists its new Base Station as a “prototype,” it hints at a very bright future for electric RVs, particularly travel trailers. This all-new model focuses on modularity, allowing buyers to build and option out their own as they see fit. Smart technology is the cornerstone of the Base Station, and Honda notes a long list of available forward-thinking features. The interior will be bright and roomy with enough floor space for a queen-sized sleeping area and pop-up standing/changing space. Plus, the five standard windows are swappable for everything from a kitchen to a shower to an air-conditioning system. It’s all run off a lithium-ion battery system powered by solar, likely with a robust inverter to keep all of the above components humming both on- and off-grid.

Honda has also confirmed that it’s focusing on lightweight design. Many mid-sized and larger travel trailers require fuller-sized trucks and SUVs to safely tow. A trimmer design opens the door for towing with a wider range of vehicles, including many smaller sedans and crossovers. The silhouette should even be compact enough to fit into a standard American garage.

Official specs, pricing, and availability on the Base Station are thin. But Honda has created a dedicated page to stay up to date on its (hopeful) development.
