Feel Good Friday: Shinola, Where American is Made

When you think about Detroit, you might think cars.  Start envisioning something else-watches, bicycles, and more.

Shinola is part of a growing movement that celebrates the beauty of manufacturing and investment in the American workforce. It was founded in 2011 with the goal to make quality products and to make them right here in America. The company started by partnering with a world class watchmaker based in Switzerland to help build a state-of-the-art watch making factory in 30,000 square feet of the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Midtown, Detroit. Detroit locals were trained in the delicate process of movement and watch assembly.

Both the corporate headquarters and watch factory are housed within the College. Shinola relies on an open and collaborative interaction with CCS students through Shinola-sponsored classes. Engaging with students on programs that range from graphic and interior design to product and craft, these hands-on workshops provide students with real-world experience and direct access to Shinola executives. They believe the integration of local creative talent with their manufacturing operations will enable the brand to produce consumer goods that are beautiful, meaningful, and built to last.

The Manual asked a few questions of Shinola Creative Director Daniel Caudill –

What makes you extra excited about producing product in Detroit?

The most exciting thing about producing products in Detroit is the people. We not only are making products in a city that is steeped in manufacturing history, but we are working with passionate and skilled individuals, creating jobs and together working towards a position future for the city.

What product category do you get most excited about?

My perspective is to make sure our categories connect and are aesthetically aligned.  Each category is unique and exciting. The fun part is tying them all together. As we do with our current range, we will work with experts in each area to produce the highest quality product.

Where next will your product categories be expanding?

We are reviewing a number of categories including footwear and expanding our leather accessory offering. The tag line for Shinola is “Where American is made”.  Being raised in Michigan, I couldn’t be more proud of the investment in American made coolness.

Look Good and Feel Better By Supporting Brands that Support Ocean Conservation
Sand Cloud

A United Nations Environment Program study estimates that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. There are many factors that have contributed to the demise of ocean life, however, some of the most impactful come from using single-use plastics. Thankfully, many apparel and lifestyle brands that support the oceans have reconfigured their efforts to manufacturing products that are more environmentally conscious and donating profits to organizations devoted to save the oceans.

Plastic waste has long been considered one of the most pressing issues when it comes to saving our oceans. Not only does it diminish the beauty of Earth’s most cherished resource, plastic waste, along with pollution and destructive fishing practices, take a major toll on our marine ecosystems as well as our very own health.

Nothing New Turns Old Plastic Into Stylish, Sustainable Sneakers
nothing new shoes

For a recently launched sneaker brand like Nothing New, the name itself might seem counterintuitive. Yet the difference is in the details, and Nothing New certainly lives up to its name when it comes to quality production. ir sneakers are made with style and sustainability to boot -- Nothing New crafts its simple and subtly stylish sneaker line with 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.

That means no virgin plastic anywhere on the sneaker -- and if that seems like a heck of an undertaking, well, Nothing New is in capable hands, to say the least. The brand was launched in June by CEO Nolan Walsh of none other than Thursday Boots (makers of some our favorite rugged leather boots, at that).

Tan France Wants Everyone to Dress for the Job (and Life) They Want
tan france mens wearhouse suit drive at highland men s salt lake city 1

Doing a solid wardrobe purge is a great idea any time of the year, but this July retailer Men’s Wearhouse gives us some further motivation, teaming up with fashion expert and television personality Tan France for its 12th annual Suit Drive. The event offers a special opportunity to do good while doing something good for yourself — or at least your closet — at the same time.

France is best known for his role on Queer Eye, the Netflix makeover show reboot (now entering its fourth season); as well as his “micro series” Dressing Funny (where he dresses “some of the funniest people on the planet”) on Netflix’s YouTube channel. As a designer, stylist, and fashion writer, France knows a thing or two about what works — and what doesn’t — for personal style, so he’s a perfect choice for the suit drive’s spokesperson, his second year in the part.
