How to choose carry-on bags that solve the travel problems we all hate

How to select the right carry-on bag for seamless travel

From size requirements to organizational pockets, deciding on which carry-on bag to buy leaves most travelers with a lot of decisions to make. Today’s new luggage designs prioritize versatility, tech-readiness, and physical comfort, while still meeting airline size rules. Selecting the right carry-on bag starts with understanding the most common travel struggles we all hate — from uncontrollable wheels to wobbly handles. Here’s what you need to know to choose the right type of carry-on bag for comfort, aesthetics, and functionality.

The everyday travel struggles we all hate

“We’ve all been there, rolling your bag through the airport while the wheels seem to have a mind of their own or gripping a handle that feels like it might give out before you even reach your gate. Wobbly handles and uncontrollable wheels that give you a workout are two of the biggest frustrations I hear from travelers, and they can really take the fun out of a trip,” says Juan Phillips, Travelpro VP of Product Design & Innovation. Phillips says many luggage brands even ignore regulations and make carry-on bags bigger than the true carry-on size standards, which can leave travelers in a bind when trying to fit suitcases into overhead bins.

While it may seem like a small inconvenience, Phillips says that using the wrong carry-on bag can affect the overall travel experience more than most travelers realize. “I’ve had my share of trips with a bag that felt like it was working against me, whether it was heavy, awkward to steer, or constantly tipping over. You don’t think much about the impact your luggage has until it starts slowing you down when you’re racing through the airport, trying to make a connection, or hauling it across city streets. The right bag should move with you, not hold you back,” he shares.

What makes the perfect carry-on suitcase

When I think of the perfect carry-on bag, “It really comes down to the two W’s: weight and wheels. A perfect carry-on should be easy to roll and even easier to lift, even when it’s packed,” he shares. Your carry-on suitcase should be made of durable yet lightweight materials that don’t weigh you down before you even start packing. “Wheels make all the difference, too. Ours are designed to glide so smoothly you can push your bag with one finger, which makes every step through the airport a little easier.”

For those who travel for both business and leisure, Phillips recommends selecting a bag that can easily transition between both types of travel. “Look for a neutral, professional style with flexible interior space for dress clothes, tech, and casual wear. Expandability is also key. A bag that adapts to your trip instead of the other way around is worth its weight in gold. My top picks are from our Platinum Elite and VersaPack+ collections.”

Size and weight considerations

Travelers shopping for a carry-on suitcase should always consider size and weight restrictions for specific airlines. Per Phillips, it’s one of the most important things to check before making a purchase, especially since many airlines continue to adjust baggage policies. “Even a small difference in size or weight can lead to unexpected fees or a last-minute gate check. That’s why keeping your bag light but roomy is key. A well-designed carry-on should meet most domestic and international standards while giving you every inch of usable space,” he shares.

Tips for selecting a carry-on that works across different airlines

  • Look for a bag that’s been tested in the real world
  • Research dimensions and weight specifications
  • Review compact versions that meet stricter requirements without sacrificing space

Emerging trends in luggage design

“Travel is fun, adventurous, and aspirational, but the reality is that getting somewhere new or visiting someone you love isn’t always picture-perfect. When you’re delayed, rerouted, or stuck in a line that’s way too long, your gear shouldn’t add to the stress. It should be the easiest part of your trip,” says Phillips.

Today, many luggage companies are crafting innovations designed to enhance the travel experience in new ways. For example, Travelpro’s VersaPack+ carry-on spinners offer built-in organization pockets to reduce time spent looking for items and self-aligning, magnetic wheels that deliver an effortless roll through the airport.

Other innovations, such as built-in USB-A and USB-C ports or detachable laptop desks, are designed to appeal to certain types of travelers seeking an easy flying experience. When shopping for luggage with exciting new features, however, Phillips warns that not all features are truly useful. He warns against “gimmicks” like ride-on luggage that may end up causing more harm than help.

Recent emerging trends in carry-on luggage also place a heavy emphasis on materials and the production of bags. “Sustainability has become a major focus in luggage design, which is a really positive shift, says Phillips. Today’s travelers are now seeking bags made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles to help reduce environmental waste.

London has no shortage of rooftop bars. Florattica still stands out
This East London rooftop bar proves you don't need to be 50 floors up to impress
Bar, Person, Candle

London does not need another rooftop bar. The city has them stacked on top of skyscrapers, tucked behind hotel lobbies, and squeezed onto buildings where you'd swear there isn't room for a bar, let alone a view. So when a new one claims to be worth your evening, it has some convincing to do.

Florattica, perched on the 11th floor of Canopy by Hilton London City, did the convincing. It just recently picked up its first PIN from The Pinnacle Guide, and after a night spent working through its cocktail menu (slowly, responsibly, mostly), it's easy to see why.
