The best RVs deliver a camping experience with most (or all) of the comforts of home — “roughing it” without getting too rough. But, there’s a new crop of next-generation models designed to take that to a whole new level, thanks to the wonders of modern battery and electric technology. Lightship is looking to be at the forefront of that revolution with the launch of its first all-electric production travel trailer, the limited-edition AE.1 Cosmos.
Inside, the AE.1 interior feels bright, minimalist, and modern in either of the two available colorways: Timberline and DuskHorizon. Because it boasts more glass than any travel trailer I’m aware of — a dozen panoramic windows and a half-dozen skylights in total — the cabin is bathed in natural light while affording unobstructed views of your latest bucket-list-worthy camp spot. It’s roomy enough to sleep four adults via a convertible day bed at the rear paired with a convertible midship dinette. You’ll find all of the features of a typical luxury RV, including a roomy marine bathroom (with shower and sink), an automotive-grade climate control system, and a galley kitchen complete with a fridge, a microwave, a convection oven, an induction cooktop, and even a dishwasher.
The AE.1’s tech-forward design is, first and foremost, about sustainability and function. Lightship calls it a “self-contained microgrid.” Indeed, there are charging ports and wireless charging pads everywhere to keep your favorite mobile gadgets topped up. At its core is a beefy battery bank and a standard integrated solar array that spans the entire roof. This not only offers the potential for weeks of off-grid camping but the joy of ditching the noise of a traditional gas generator and the hazard of traveling with onboard propane tanks.
That same electric-first design also makes the AE.1 a dream to tow. It’s outfitted with a clever telescoping shell that maximizes aerodynamics on the road and living space when it’s time to make camp. Lightship also developed a proprietary TrekDrive self-propulsion power system to electrically assist your vehicle when towing. Two-way force sensing allows the trailer to increase power output on steep climbs and better control braking on the downhills. The technology combines to provide up to 300 miles of extended range, so EV owners can rest easy.
Lightship is the country’s first all-electric RV manufacturer, with all of its design and manufacturing done in the United States (take that, tariffs!). The Colorado brand debuted its original Lightship L1 travel trailer at SXSW back in 2023 and has been quietly putting the finishing touches on its first production model ever since.
The Lightship AE.1 Cosmos travel trailer is now available for pre-order with a base price of $250,000. It ain’t cheap, but the price after tax credits is a slightly more palatable $239,900. So, there’s that. It’s a limited-edition run of just 50, though, so if you want one, you might want to order now. First deliveries are expected this summer. Lightship confirms three additional trim levels — Atmos, Panos, and Terros — are in the works, each tailored with unique features and prices.
