How a family’s century-old promise shaped this soulful Mexican tequila

This heritage tequila brand is redefining luxury with legacy, not celebrity

Leyenda 1925 Spirits
Leyenda 1925 Spirits

As National Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds, it’s the perfect time to spotlight stories that go beyond tradition; stories of legacy, craftsmanship, and cultural pride passed down through generations. Leyenda 1925, a luxury tequila brand born in the red-soiled agave fields of Los Altos de Jalisco, is exactly that kind of story.

Founded by cousins Julio, Juan, and Montse González, Leyenda 1925 is more than just a premium tequila. It’s a living tribute to their grandfather’s vision, a celebration of Mexican heritage, and a bold statement of what modern luxury rooted in authenticity can look like. Every detail, from the slow-cooked, additive-free process to the artistic bottle design, reflects a century-old promise: to honor the past, live fully in the present, and elevate the future.

In this exclusive interview, the González family opens up about the memories that shaped their passion, the artisanal process behind their three signature expressions- Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo- and their commitment to carrying their grandfather’s values forward. We also speak with Joe Correia, the veteran luxury brand strategist behind Leyenda 1925’s recent Massachusetts launch, on how Leyenda 1925 is carving out a quiet, confident space in a noisy spirits market.

All about Leyenda 1925

The Manual: Leyenda 1925 honors the 100th anniversary of your grandfather’s pioneering spirit in 1925. Can you share a specific memory from your childhood in the agave fields of Jalisco that ignited your passion for tequila and shaped the brand’s core values of passion, purpose, and patience?

Julio González: I clearly remember those mornings in the agave fields of Los Altos de Jalisco, walking hand in hand with my grandfather as he taught me to respect the land. As a child, I would watch in admiration as he examined each plant with patience and devotion, explaining to me that a great tequila is born in the fields long before it reaches the bottle. That memory ignited in me a passion that today lives on in the values of Leyenda 1925. A passion for my legacy, purpose in every detail, and the patience to wait for the perfect maturation that honors the work of generations.

The Manual: “Leyenda” evokes legend and myth- how does the name 1925 pay tribute to your family’s generations of agave cultivation, and what does each bottle’s artistic design reveal about your Mexican roots, land, and cultural pride?

Juan González: Leyenda 1925 honors the year our grandfather was born, the root of our family story. Each bottle carries that legacy: the “III” on the neck represents the third generation, the 44 engraved lines pay tribute to the agave plant, and the 1925 numerals preserve our grandfather’s original handwriting. Simple details, but they reflect our roots and the pride of sharing an authentic tequila.

The Manual: Marking a full century since your grandfather’s beginnings, what felt like the perfect moment to bring Leyenda 1925 to life with your family, and how has the family’s shared dream evolved into this sophisticated collection?

Juan González: Our grandfather’s centennial was the perfect moment to bring a long-held dream to life. Julio, Montse, and I felt it was time to honor his legacy and share it with the world. What began as a family vision has become a refined collection that blends tradition with a modern touch and deep respect for our roots. Looking ahead, we want Leyenda 1925 to continue growing as a symbol of authenticity and as a tequila that elevates life’s most meaningful moments.

The Manual: Walk us through the meticulous 36-hour slow cook in masonry ovens and 72-hour open-air fermentation- why are these traditional methods non-negotiable for delivering 100% additive-free tequila with such pure, complex character?

Montse González: For me, these steps are the very soul of our tequila. Slow cooking in brick ovens releases the agave’s natural sweetness, and open-air fermentation lets aromas and flavors fully develop in a way you can truly feel when tasting. It’s never about shortcuts; it’s about respecting a process that has carried meaning for generations. That’s why our tequila is pure and expressive; it’s a way of honoring tradition with honesty, offering tequila exactly as it was meant to be.

The Manual: For readers new to premium Blancos, describe the herbal aromas, charred pineapple flavors, and clean 4-second aftertaste of Leyenda 1925 Blanco. What’s your go-to way to sip it neat versus mixing it into an elevated cocktail like the Espresso Martini?

Montse González: Our Blanco is fresh and alive, it greets you with herbal aromas and the sweetness of cooked agave, with hints of pineapple lightly charred, almost smoky. There’s also that green, mineral character that reminds you of the land where the agave grows. On the palate, it’s bright, clean, and balanced, and the aftertaste is crisp but lingers just long enough to invite another sip. Personally, I love it neat in a Riedel glass, because that’s where you truly appreciate its purity. But I also enjoy how its brightness elevates a cocktail.

The Manual: How does the 8-month rest in used American white oak barrels transform the Reposado into a velvety sipper with notes of ripe pineapple, caramelized agave, and oak wood – and what makes its 6-second linger so memorable?

Montse González: Our Reposado is where patience shows. Eight months in oak gives it this balance that I love, the freshness of agave with just the right touch of vanilla, caramel, and ripe fruit. What makes it linger so memorable is the way it stays gentle but present, almost like a soft echo that doesn’t rush to leave. It’s warm, silky, and comforting, the kind of tequila that makes you pause and smile after each sip.

The Manual: Aged 18 months for depth, the Añejo brings smoky vanilla, white chocolate, and tobacco forward. As a full-bodied sipper, how does it stand out for high-income professionals seeking an authentic after-dinner ritual?

Montse González: Our Añejo is elegance in a glass. Eighteen months in American oak give it depth and roundness, where smoky vanilla, dark chocolate, and tobacco come together seamlessly. It’s rich and layered, with a silky mouthfeel that lingers long after each sip. More than a drink, it’s an organoleptic experience, a ritual that invites you to slow down and savor. For high-income professionals, it feels like enjoying a fine wine or cognac after dinner, but with the authenticity and soul of agave.

The Manual: Montse, your leadership in organizing tastings and tours to fund Jaltepec’s programs for vulnerable women is inspiring – how does this commitment to education and self-sufficiency extend the brand’s legacy beyond the bottle, touching lives as your grandfather envisioned?

Montse González: I believe a great tequila should not only taste good, it should also do good. Through Leyenda 1925, I’ve been able to support Jaltepec, an educational project in Jalisco that gives young women in social disadvantage the opportunity to study and transform their lives. My grandfather always said that the greatest legacy we can leave is in the lives we touch and the hearts we inspire, and I experience that every day at Jaltepec. When you educate a woman, you don’t just change her life, you change her family and her community. Women are the foundation of society, and an educated woman has the power to break cycles of poverty and open doors for generations. That’s how our tequila carries purpose beyond the glass.

The Manual: The brand message of “Honor the Past, Be in the Present, and Elevate the Future” resonates deeply. How do you balance Jalisco’s timeless traditions with modern touches to create a tequila that elevates the soul for today’s 30-55-year-old connoisseurs?

Julio González: Balance arises from understanding that our roots are the essence of Leyenda 1925. We preserve the artisanal methods of tequila: the careful harvesting of agave, the slow cooking process, and meticulous attention to detail. At the same time, we incorporate a contemporary vision into the design, presentation, and overall drinking experience. In this way, each bottle speaks both to those who value tradition and to true connoisseurs, elevating the soul and pride of enjoying a tequila that is living history with a modern touch.

The Manual: For home mixologists, guide us through recreating the Paloma Sangria with Reposado – tips on balancing grapefruit juice, Oporto Tawny, and agave syrup to capture that fruity, syrupy essence while highlighting the tequila’s heritage?

Juan González: The Paloma Sangria with Reposado is a fresh way to show how tequila can blend with other flavors while keeping its essence. My tip is to build it step by step, adjusting as you go, so that no element overshadows the tequila, which must always remain the star.

The Manual: For The Manual enthusiasts pairing tequila with fine dining or lifestyle moments, recommend a Leyenda 1925 variant for an Old Fashioned cocktail with Añejo – any tweaks with Pedro Ximénez nectar and bitters to elevate the smoky, vanilla notes?

Juan González: Our Añejo already works beautifully in an Old Fashioned, and beyond Pedro Ximénez and bitters, my advice is to keep it simple: use quality ice, a solid rocks glass, and let the tequila speak for itself. Sometimes less is more, and the key is to highlight the smoothness and elegance of what’s in the bottle.

The Manual: Each bottle is a visual tribute to your people and land – how did the family collaborate on its sleek, intricate design, and why does it feel like more than just packaging for a luxury experience?

Juan González: Designing the bottle was an experience in itself. For us, it’s not just a container but an object filled with meaning in every detail. From the start, we wanted to return to our roots, draw inspiration from our grandfather’s writings, and create a symbol that carries the spirit of agave. More than just a bottle, it’s an experience with deep meaning to us.

Debuting in Massachusetts

The Manual: Since the June debut in Massachusetts, what’s been the most surprising reader feedback on Leyenda 1925’s authenticity and taste, and how has it reinforced your promise to uphold generational excellence?

Julio González: What has surprised us the most is how consumers in Massachusetts immediately recognize the authenticity of our tequila. Many say that when they taste it, they feel a direct connection to Mexico, to the agave fields, and to a true legacy – not something manufactured. Hearing that our flavor feels honest and soulful confirms that we are delivering on our promise of generational excellence. That reaction strengthens our commitment to keeping traditions alive and proudly sharing them with the world.

The Manual: Joe, with your 18 years of experience in elevating luxury brands, what drew you to partner with the González family, and how did you curate the exclusive Massachusetts launch to appeal to New England’s premium bars and clubs?

Joe Correia: This partnership was about restoring authenticity, the cornerstone of real luxury, something far too many brands now try to replace with a famous face and quick marketing spin. Julio, Montse, and Juan are not borrowing heritage; they are the third generation carrying forward nearly 100 years of tequila craftsmanship. That lineage, combined with their purpose-driven mission, drew me to Leyenda 1925 – the only brand worth redefining the category with. For Massachusetts, we treated the launch with a simple but strategic approach, curating placements where patrons already go when looking for quality and luxury experiences in neighborhoods such as Boston’s Back Bay, Seaport, and South End, to name a few. In addition, we teamed up with Ruby Wines’ sales team to focus on top-tier bars and private clubs, building relationships with our audience through intimate tastings and hands-on events.

The Manual: Three months post-debut, availability has grown to spots like the North Shore and Vinodivino Boston – what’s next for Leyenda 1925 beyond New England, and how will you maintain its quiet confidence in a crowded luxury tequila space?

Joe Correia: What’s next is simple: we keep building the brand the same way it was created; hands-on. That means a multitude of smaller-scale dinners and tastings where Julio, Montse, and Juan will personally travel up to Massachusetts, Texas, and into new markets to share the story themselves. In a category crowded with noise, we’re not chasing hype; we’re creating moments of intimacy, authenticity, and purpose. Beyond Massachusetts and Austin, Texas, we are extremely excited about expanding into New York with Empire Merchants, but with the same quiet confidence that sets us apart.

The best beers to pair with your summer yard games
Anderson Valley

When it comes to leisure activities during the summer months, it’s difficult to beat the appeal of a round of yard games. What could be more fun on a hot, sunny day than besting your friends and siblings in an epic backyard brawl? I can’t think of anything.

I’m talking about games like croquet, lawn darts, bocce, ladder ball, cornhole, and more. The only thing that makes the experience better is having a frosty, refreshing beer firmly in one of your hands. But just like how you don’t enjoy every yard game, not just any beer will do.
