In recent years, more brands have been making American single malt whiskey because it’s finally a recognized category. But one brand has been crafting award-winning single malts long before it became popular: Stranahan’s. The number one American single malt whiskey brand recently announced the launch of its oldest expression to date.

Stranahan’s Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old

The newest addition to its Mountain Angel family of whiskeys (joining the already released 10- and 12-year-old expressions), Stranahan’s Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old began with a mash bill of 100% malted barley. It was matured for a decade in new, charred American white oak barrels before spending 3 years and 3 months in ex-cognac casks. Finally, it was finished for 9 months in Tokaji wine barrels. All of this aging occurred in Stranahan’s barrel house, located a mile above sea level.

According to Stranahan’s, the result is a 94.6 proof American single malt whiskey that begins with a nose of candied apricot, orange marmalade, prunes, and raisins. Sipping it reveals an epic, multi-layered, velvety smooth palate of baked apples, stone fruits, toasted vanilla beans, caramelized sugar, pipe tobacco, and cracked black pepper. The finish is long and warm, ending with a combination of tropical fruits, chocolate fudge, dry oak, and gentle spices. This single malt whiskey is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or with a splash or two of water to open up the aromas and flavors.

“Our Mountain Angel family reflects more than 22 years of pioneering the American single malt category and our commitment to showing what aging a mile above sea level can achieve,” Stranahan’s Head Blender Justin Aden says.

“In this bottle, Hungarian Tokaji casks beautifully complement Stranahan’s naturally fruity character, adding a richness to the mouthfeel that balances the oak spice developed over 14 total years of aging.”

Where can I buy it?

Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old will be available beginning this year at Stranahan’s Distillery in Denver, Stranahan’s Whiskey Lodge in Aspen, and at select whiskey retailers in Colorado, California, Texas, and Florida for the suggested retail price of $129.99 per 750 ml bottle. The whiskey will roll out nationally in the coming months. For more information on this release and Stranahan’s full whiskey portfolio, visit www.stranahans.com.

Imperial IPAs to drink this fall
Lawson's Finest

If you don’t think the IPA is a great beer for autumn, it’s probably because your only experience with this hoppy style is the piney, bitter West Coast IPA, the light, crushable session IPA, or the hazy, juicy New England-style IPA. But fall is the perfect time of year for the Imperial IPA for a variety of reasons.

In my years writing about alcohol, I’ve spent a lot of time tasting and rating IPAs. While it might seem like you need to finish off all your lighter beers (including IPAs) as the days get shorter and colder, that is not the case with Imperial IPAs. In fact, I believe that there aren’t many beers better for cool fall weather than this boozy, hoppy beer style.

Classic fall-flavored dark beers you should be drinking this season
Great Lakes

If autumn were a flavor, what would it be? I know this task is difficult, so let’s make it easier by thinking in beer terms. What beers taste the most like fall? Is it a pumpkin beer? Maybe an Oktoberfest beer? How about a smoked beer that emulates the aromas of a fall campfire? All of these are absolutely correct. That’s because fall is full of flavors, and the beer you drink reflects you and your personal tastes.

Fall is also definitely a dark beer. There’s no doubt about that. Cold nights, short days. It’s the perfect time for dark, malty, warming beers.
