Fans of both well-made, long-aged whiskey and superhero movies will love Orphan Barrel’s newest release. That’s because this brand, known for releasing whiskeys made up of forgotten, long-aged whiskey, is releasing an expression inspired by Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday.” The movie releases in theaters on December 18th, but the whiskey will be available starting next month.

Named for the fictional nation ruled by Doctor Doom, this one-time release was matured for 2 decades before it was ready to be bottled. This special release is not only tied to a popular movie franchise, but it’s also the brand’s first American light whiskey.

Made mostly from a corn-based mash bill distilled in Indiana, Orphan Barrel Latverian Cask was blended from barrels matured in Kentucky, along with some aged in Indiana. It aged in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-rye, and multi-use barrels that previously held batch light whiskey and other American whiskeys.

According to the brand, the result is a complex, multi-layered 92-proof whiskey that begins with a nose of caramelized sugar and toasted vanilla beans. Sipping it reveals a symphony of flavors including honey, butterscotch, candied orange peel, and oak. The finish is long and warm, ending with a balance of vanilla and dried fruit. A whiskey this timeless deserves to be sipped neat or on the rocks.

“Part of what makes working on Orphan Barrel so exciting is coming across whiskies that have developed in ways you might not expect,” Andrew Mackay, Master Blender, US Whiskey, Diageo, says.

“When we discovered this 20-Year-Old Light Whiskey, what stood out was how much character it had developed over two decades while still retaining the softer profile that defines the category. At this age, you’re working with something finite that can’t be recreated once it’s gone, which is exactly the kind of remarkable liquid we want to bring forward through the Orphan Barrel project.”

Where can I buy it?

Orphan Barrel Latverian Cask will be available beginning November 1, 2026, at select whiskey retailers nationwide, online at TheBar.com, and at Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Shively, Kentucky for a suggested retail price of $200. Imperial IPAs to drink this fall
Lawson's Finest

If you don’t think the IPA is a great beer for autumn, it’s probably because your only experience with this hoppy style is the piney, bitter West Coast IPA, the light, crushable session IPA, or the hazy, juicy New England-style IPA. But fall is the perfect time of year for the Imperial IPA for a variety of reasons.

In my years writing about alcohol, I’ve spent a lot of time tasting and rating IPAs. While it might seem like you need to finish off all your lighter beers (including IPAs) as the days get shorter and colder, that is not the case with Imperial IPAs. In fact, I believe that there aren’t many beers better for cool fall weather than this boozy, hoppy beer style.

Classic fall-flavored dark beers you should be drinking this season
Great Lakes

If autumn were a flavor, what would it be? I know this task is difficult, so let’s make it easier by thinking in beer terms. What beers taste the most like fall? Is it a pumpkin beer? Maybe an Oktoberfest beer? How about a smoked beer that emulates the aromas of a fall campfire? All of these are absolutely correct. That’s because fall is full of flavors, and the beer you drink reflects you and your personal tastes.

Fall is also definitely a dark beer. There’s no doubt about that. Cold nights, short days. It’s the perfect time for dark, malty, warming beers.

Heaven Hill is releasing a bourbon featuring whiskey from before a 1996 fire destroyed its original distillery
Heaven Hill Phoenix

Everyone loves comeback stories, right? In 1996, lightning struck the Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery and destroyed it in a fire. Driven by wind, the 1935 distillery burned to the ground. The inferno destroyed around 100,000 aging barrels. To honor this event, Heaven Hill is releasing Heaven Hill Phoenix, a limited-edition, one-time 18-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
