There is nothing more American than a leather jacket and jeans. James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Tom Cruise all made the leather jacket icons of American culture with their looks on-screen. As a man, you can’t help but feel different when you throw one on and wear it out of the house. You take on a different aura, there is a personality that comes with the look. But the looks have changed over the years. What James Dean and Marlon Brando wore in the mid-century, Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford improved on as the decades got later and later. And, here we are, forty years after them, it has evolved even more. So, how do you wear a leather coat today? I reached out to The Jacket Maker, one of the premiere leather makers in the industry, to get some insider tips on how to make this look work in 2026, without losing the legacy of the last 100 years.
The leather jacket has evolved quite rapidly over the last few years. Making 2026 an even bigger and brighter year for leather outerwear across the world. – Gath A. D’Silva, Head of Design at The Jacket Maker
Wearing a leather jacket in 2026

When it comes to style, I consider myself an expert. I have been in the business for a long time, and therefore I do feel that I could tell you everything you need to know about how to wear a leather jacket and make it look fantastic. However, there is also an inescapable truth that style is individual and therefore there aren’t hard rules, which means getting another opinion on guidelines to wearing a leather jacket in 2026. So, while I would tell you to keep it simple and let the legacy of the leather jacket speak, D’Silva has his own ideas for you to take in to evolve your look.
“The way leather is worn is completely open-ended,” D’Silva says. “Especially leather jackets in 2026. With a wide array of inspiration available and the striking imagination that is visible everywhere in the world, makes styling tips in 2026; a little passé. At this point, one can wear a leather jacket with khaki green cargo trousers, Oxford shoes, a striped button-up, and a neckerchief. Add a pair of sunglasses with a bucket cap, and it’s a great look that is unique and international.”
Can you wear a leather jacket in the rain?

I have always been terrified to ruin my leather jacket if I wear it in the rain. Everything I have ever learned has told me that leather is to be kept dry at all cost. But, This is something I will admit could be an old wives tale, so I asked D’Silva if wearing a leather jacket in the rain or the wet weather was a good idea.
“Unless a leather jacket is waterproof or at the very least water-resistant, it isn’t recommended, wearing leather jackets in wet weather. This applies to suede as well. A slight, unavoidable situation where leather is briefly exposed to wet conditions may not be harmful instantly; however, excessive exposure to this climate may bring irreversible damage.”
How do you care for a leather jacket?

Now, here is where I won’t pretend to be an expert. Caring for your leather is the number one way to make whatever leather jacket you are wearing a family heirloom instead of ruining it by not being prepared or wearing it in times where you could damage it. So, I turn to D’Silva to give you an idea of how to care for this new version of you and the heirloom you are leaving for your family.
“Unlike the hype and the myths that are floating around online, about maintaining and cleaning leather outerwear, to the point of it being a ritual, conducted step by step, isn’t exactly what every leather jacket needs. While The Jacket Maker does encourage proper care and maintenance for leather jackets, it is meant to be according to the needs of a specific leather jacket. Some jackets: being used more frequently, undergoing harsh environments would require more care than a leather jacket that is worn a couple of times every other week. Being real leather; it is best to ensure the surface is clean and moisturized to last years of enjoyable wear.”
I don’t know how your aura is doing at the start of 2026, but if you are like me, it can ALWAYS use an upgrade. In 2026, we are still riding the vintage look love. Therefore, your can’t miss choice is the leather coat for the last few months of snowy weather.
