Trekking: Slice and spread with the TravelMate Kit

Man isn’t meant to stay indoors — our weekly “Trekking” column can attest to that. It’s a column dedicated to the adventurer inside of all of us, the one pining to ditch the office humdrum for a seven-week jaunt in the Grand Tetons, or fiending to catch some waves someplace other than the North Shore. One day we may highlight a new ultra-light camping stove or minimalist water filter, and the next you may find us getting wrapped up in a set of Norquayco’s handmade canoe paddles. Life doesn’t just happen inside the workplace and home, so get outside and live it.

A Swiss Army Knife can only get you so far in the wild. Lately, the iconic tool seems to be available in more configurations than there are uses for it, allowing you to perform a melange of tasks spanning everything from cutting kindling to cracking shells in a more humane manner. Nonetheless, it’s not quite as convenient as the Buck Knives TravelMate Kit ($77) when it comes to capitalizing on your inner chef when you’re miles away from the comforts of your kitchen and the latest line of Cutco knives.

The 5.4-ounce kit is ideal for the outdoors, while conveniently providing a stainless-steel blade that’s just as apt at spreading peanut butter and jelly as it is slicing bread, meat, and any other sustenance you might throw at it. The serrated knife is only one facet, though. The compact device also houses a multi-functional fork that touts an integrated screwdriver, grill scraper, bottle opener, and can opener — rendering prep work easier than ever before — all of which fits snugly in the antimicrobial sheath for safe and secure storage in your backpack or beside your tent. Apparently, the company’s Model 110 Folding Hunter was only the beginning…
