Mercedes-Benz just took the phrase “music on the go” to a whole new level. The automaker teamed up with Universal Music Group and Dolby to turn the rear cabin of a Mercedes Maybach into a working sound studio. The new concept, called “Crafted in a Mercedes,” lets artists plug in and start producing tracks with studio-quality precision — without leaving the car.
The idea was unveiled in Los Angeles, where producers and musicians got to experience the system firsthand. Among them were Grammy winner FINNEAS and Aron Forbes, both of whom put the Dolby Atmos setup through its paces and came away impressed by what’s possible when music meets mobility.
The mobile studio: creativity in motion
“Crafted in a Mercedes” builds on a 2022 collaboration between Mercedes and Universal Music Group, which introduced the “Approved in a Mercedes-Benz” standard for audio quality. This new phase goes further. The back seat of a Mercedes-Maybach now doubles as a fully functional Dolby Atmos studio, giving producers individual control over the car’s advanced speaker system. Artists can connect a laptop, open a session, and immediately start mixing or editing, all while surrounded by luxury and precise acoustics.
The goal is to merge comfort, technology, and creativity. Mercedes says it’s exploring ways to adapt the system for future models, potentially making high-end in-car production a reality for more creators. As Dolby Atmos continues to redefine how music is mixed and experienced, the collaboration sets a fresh benchmark for mobile sound innovation.
A-list debut in Los Angeles
The concept made its public debut at the Interscope Studio in LA, where industry insiders gathered for an exclusive demonstration. FINNEAS called the experience “highly satisfying,” noting that creating music in a space where people so often listen to it adds a new layer of perspective.
For Mercedes, it’s not just about luxury, it’s about expanding what a vehicle can be. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Markus Schäfer, called the project “a new benchmark for automotive sound and creativity,” signaling a future where the back seat could become a legitimate workspace for the music industry.
