Hurley and Fender Team up for Men’s Capsule Collection

Where Rock and Roll and the beach collide, you will find Hurley and Fender. On October 3, the two iconic brands amped things up for the holidays with the release of their new collaborative effort, which combines two of Southern California’s most traditional lifestyles. Fender is a world leader in manufacturing music instruments, while Hurley is a front runner in the global surf wear market. With patterns paying homage to Fender’s recognizable tweed print from the mid-fifties, the capsule collection is an ode to the surfing and Rock and Roll cultures of that time.

“The launch of the Hurley x Fender capsule collection combines almost 90 years of history dedicated to Southern California’s rich surf and music culture,” said Evan Jones, Chief Marketing Officer, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. “We are excited to partner with a brand that shares the same core values as Fender and look forward to bringing that quality and craftsmanship to life.”

The Hurley X Fender collection is composed of seven stellar pieces, from board-shorts and short sleeves for the local audience, to Dri-fit flannels and beanies for those with harsh winters. Each design was curated to represent and highlight the cultures from which both companies were conceived. The project also allows Hurley to tip their hat, if you will, to the influence music has had on its branding.

Detailing on the merchandise mixes a bit of nostalgia with simplistic modern styles of patches and graphics. The tweed pattern, which is featured on the Fender flannel, was a tell tale sign for tough and durable luggage in the fifties and, in fact, was so good that Fender pioneered the use of the material to protect musician’s fragile instruments and equipment. For those of us who enjoy the eclectic atmosphere of hearing live music, we thank you.

Phantom Block Party Fender Boardshorts ($70 US)

These bad boys offer Hurley’s signature foil branding and metallic embroidery. The shorts also boast an EZ fly closure for a more secure fit. Nobody likes swim gear that is too big or too small.

Fender Tee ($28 US)

A simple but flavorful premium tee made of 100% cotton which features iconic Hurley and Fender logos and is available in black or white. Or, you can sport one of the highlights in the collection, the white SRFGTR style tee with the famous guitar playing surfer.

Fender Irregular Dye Tee ($35 US)

This soft cotton tee features legendary Fender Stratocaster® guitar body shape and is built for a body-fitting style of comfort.

Fender Zip ($85 US)

A personal favorite of mine, the zip-up hoodie comes with a durable, water resistant coating. The inner part of the jacket is made of fleece with Sherpa lining maintaining a lightweight feel that still manages to retain plenty of heat.

Dri-FIT Fender Flannel ($78 US)

Hurley is owned by Nike, after all. So it only makes sense for their long sleeve flannel to be composed of Nike’s Dri-Fit technology, right? The two-flap chest pocket flannel is doused in tweed print and will certainly make for a great casual wear.

Fender Trucker Hat ($30 US)

The snapback trucker hat is made of Nike’s Aerobill technology, making for a breathable, light, and snug fit for those days out at the beach or up on the mountain.

Fender Beanie ($22 US)

Another highlight for the holidays, the cuffed or slouched options for wearing this beanie offers versatility and comfort. No matter how you like to wear your beanie, this knit head heater doesn’t discriminate.

You can find all these limited edition items from the Hurley X Fender collection at select specialty stores and online at hurley.com

What exactly are limited edition watches?
Know the buzz word before you buy
Citizen watch in ground beans

Have you ever watched a movie and wondered why the rare piece of art could ever be worth the obscene amount of money the debonair art thief claims it's worth? It is simple, really. It comes down to the fact that it is rare. A truly original piece of art masterfully created by the very hand who conjured it up in their mind is something that cannot be recreated. The same kind of rare value exists in the watch world, too. There is an entire industry of limited edition watches that claim rarity rivaled only by the masterful artwork of Renaissance artists who can no longer create original pieces.

But what does it really mean to say that a watch is a limited edition? Does it truly mean that there is little chance of you walking into a party or a bar and running into the ever-embarrassing moment when your "rare" watch sits on the wrist of another...in the same room? Or does it mean they just want you to buy it quickly because they have numbers to make before the shareholders' meeting? Both are possible. As usual here at The Manual, we did the legwork to make sure are armed with the information you need before you click the BUY button and invest in a limited edition watch.

A day at the races: How to dress for the Kentucky Derby
Let your colors and patterns fly at the Kentucky Derby
Men's Derby Fashion with Bowties

Thanks in no small part to social media, The Kentucky Derby has become more than a horse race, becoming a major annual fashion event. Horse races have historically been social events that encouraged spectators to dawn their most spectacular finery going back to Victorian England. That tradition carried over to the States, and three races of the Triple Crown have been fashion events for America's upper class for well over a century. As a social engagement, the greatest of the three big races is The Kentucky Derby, and the greatest part of the race is the Kentucky Derby outfits. Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky, becomes the fashion capital of the South for one weekend every May.

The rise of social media and "fit" culture have led to a boom in Kentucky Derby parties across the country over the past ten years. An event that used to be a niche interest to horse racing and gambling enthusiasts, along with the few people wealthy enough to attend the event, has become a national fashion event. People who have no interest in horse racing and will probably not even watch the race (there are a number of races happening all day, culminating in the actual headline race) gather together over their shared love of dressing up and partying. It has become an occasion to be seen, both #IRL and on every social media platform.
