VRBO Is ‘Giving Away’ a Mountain with the Win the Mountain Sweepstakes

As with hiking, going to the movies, and trimming your nose hair, skiing is an activity best enjoyed without throngs of strangers around. Unfortunately, unless your Richard Branson or some Russian oil tycoon, “private skiing” isn’t really a thing. This year, VRBO is changing that notion for we mortal men with the Win the Mountain Sweepstakes.

For skiers, snowboarders, and people who love scenic alpine grandeur in winter, this prize pack is about as sweet as it gets. One lucky winner, plus 19 of their closest friends and family, will score an entire day in February 2019 of private access at Utah’s Eagle Point Resort. In this case, “private” means private — enjoying the whole mountain including lifts, trails, all facilities, a mountain concierge, and even one-on-one ski instruction — all without a single other snow-rider in sight. The package also includes two additional days of lift tickets for everyone and a $5,000 travel stipend to get your squad to Utah.

Plus, the entire winning group will enjoy a three-night stay at a stunning, slopeside mansion in Beaver, Utah. Even for non-riders, the sprawling, 3,600-square-foot “cabin” is destination-worthy in its own right. With two living rooms, a large loft, dedicated gaming and entertainment areas, a gourmet kitchen, and two wraparound decks with an outdoor hot tub and eye-popping views, you may want to skip the slopes altogether.

The sweepstakes was announced on the heels of VRBO’s all-new 2018 Winter Travel Collection. Sometimes a budget Airbnb is good enough for those seeking reasonable slopeside accommodations. But, when you want to go big, you need a proper ski chalet. Most of the mega-cabins in this VRBO collection sleep more than 20 guests, and all boast seriously over-the-top amenities. While many run north of $1,000 per night, consider how cheap that rate actually is when you divvy it up among a dozen or more of your closest friends. Plus, VRBO offers rentals in the best U.S. ski destinations — Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Lakes, Vail, Breckenridge, and Park City — and throughout the world.

The VRBO Win the Mountain Sweepstakes is open from now through November 17, 2018. Just head to the official website, enter a few personal details, and you’re registered to win!

'We just want to say that we don't want them at all.'

Ever felt like you're not welcome on the mountain? Perhaps not, but our generation of snowboarders had the way paved by some fiercely defiant riders who were not about to bow down to pressure. The issue between skiers and snowboarders has settled a little since the '60s when snowboards started hitting the mountain. Sure, I get some lighthearted ribbing and the odd comment as a snowboarder, but just check out what these trailblazers had to contend with in this video.

If you're getting a Burton snowboard, give the Gril Master a look
Burton Gril Master snowboard topsheet

Marko “Grilo” Grilc lit up the mountains with a bright personality and riding skills. With competition victories and next-level video parts, the Burton team rider had the skills to ride with the best. But it was his sharing of the sport with his family that captured the world’s imagination.

Tragically, Grilo passed in late 2021. While the sport lost an icon, his spirit lives on in the Burton Family Tree Gril Master snowboard.
