VRBO Is ‘Giving Away’ a Mountain with the Win the Mountain Sweepstakes

As with hiking, going to the movies, and trimming your nose hair, skiing is an activity best enjoyed without throngs of strangers around. Unfortunately, unless your Richard Branson or some Russian oil tycoon, “private skiing” isn’t really a thing. This year, VRBO is changing that notion for we mortal men with the Win the Mountain Sweepstakes.

For skiers, snowboarders, and people who love scenic alpine grandeur in winter, this prize pack is about as sweet as it gets. One lucky winner, plus 19 of their closest friends and family, will score an entire day in February 2019 of private access at Utah’s Eagle Point Resort. In this case, “private” means private — enjoying the whole mountain including lifts, trails, all facilities, a mountain concierge, and even one-on-one ski instruction — all without a single other snow-rider in sight. The package also includes two additional days of lift tickets for everyone and a $5,000 travel stipend to get your squad to Utah.

Plus, the entire winning group will enjoy a three-night stay at a stunning, slopeside mansion in Beaver, Utah. Even for non-riders, the sprawling, 3,600-square-foot “cabin” is destination-worthy in its own right. With two living rooms, a large loft, dedicated gaming and entertainment areas, a gourmet kitchen, and two wraparound decks with an outdoor hot tub and eye-popping views, you may want to skip the slopes altogether.

The sweepstakes was announced on the heels of VRBO’s all-new 2018 Winter Travel Collection. Sometimes a budget Airbnb is good enough for those seeking reasonable slopeside accommodations. But, when you want to go big, you need a proper ski chalet. Most of the mega-cabins in this VRBO collection sleep more than 20 guests, and all boast seriously over-the-top amenities. While many run north of $1,000 per night, consider how cheap that rate actually is when you divvy it up among a dozen or more of your closest friends. Plus, VRBO offers rentals in the best U.S. ski destinations — Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Lakes, Vail, Breckenridge, and Park City — and throughout the world.

TREW Primo review
TRW PRIMO jacket and bib

More than ever, outerwear seems staid. Everything is GORE-TEX; it's almost like the only remaining choice is bibs or pants. Is there any outerwear that is actually unique anymore?

Pacific Northwest company TREW goes about outerwear differently. Sure, it's waterproof, and you can get bibs or pants, but where TREW stands apart is with its dedication to being a fit for all body types as well as any snow sport you want to involve yourself in.

Good investment or an elitist ripoff: Is expensive winter outdoor gear worth the money?
You get what you pay for, right? What about with winter gear, though?
Winter road

Hobbies are expensive. Whether you picked up golf clubs and decided it is your new obsession, or began riding motorcycles across the country, your hobbies cost a ton of money. It shouldn't cost as much money as it does to explore and experience the world. Yet here we are. Winter gear is some of the most expensive apparel on the market, and it leaves many of us wondering if buying outdoor gear for winter is worth the money. It isn't a straightforward answer, so we took a stab at it.

Do you get what you pay for with outdoor gear?
This is no easy place to start this piece, but in the interest of getting it out the way straight away, yes, you do. This is a tentative yes, not an outright certainty, and there are two major caveats I also want to address early.
