Just in time for fall and winter waves across California and Hawaii, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines have updated their surfboard travel policy. Surfers traveling between those regions, and more, can now rest easy knowing their foam and fiberglass treasures are in good hands. Not only that, but the policy allows multiple boards on a single trip.
The airlines’ updated policy makes chasing waves easier than ever

Every surfboard is a work of art, typically constructed of foam and fiberglass, often with a gorgeous airbrush job to celebrate the waves. At the same time, these wave-bound creations need TLC, as bumps and dings can puncture their surface, let water in, and ruin the ride. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ new surfboard policy not only protects surfers’ cherished tools but also allows multiple boards in a single bag up to 10’5” in length. For flights on Embraer E175 aircraft, the policy is identical, except for a 9’7” length limit.
The ability to bring multiple boards is particularly significant, as wave conditions can demand different tools to maximize the ride. Families also win, with the ability to pack boards for everyone.
The airlines created the policy to cater to surfers of all types. Devoted surfers traveling the world in search of epic conditions now have the space and peace of mind to bring a “quiver” of boards. From Tahiti to Australia, traveling surfers can now bring exactly what they need to match the surf.
Beyond that, the airlines treat surfboards as standard checked baggage, with no extra fees. Even better, residents traveling between Hawaiian islands receive one checked bag, inclusive of surfboards. Atmos Rewards members and those booking with branded credit cards also receive bag allowances.
