Age statements can be a tricky thing for a liquor — just ask Jefferson’s Reserve, which for years has leaned on “Very Old” label instead of committing to a number.
That changes now. Jefferson’s Bourbon has rebranded its entire portfolio’s packaging, and alongside the redesign, Reserve is finally getting a real age statement: 8 years.
Jefferson’s Reserve originally carried a 15-year age statement when it launched, but dropped it years ago in favor of that vaguer “Very Old” branding, blending bourbons that outside reviewers have generally guessed at somewhere between 12 and 20 years without Jefferson’s ever confirming specifics.
The new 8-Year statement also comes with a proof increase, from 90.2 to 96. Jefferson’s Very Small Batch Bourbon also picked up a proof bump, from 83 to 88.
The redesigned packaging keeps the core portfolio’s silhouette but gives it a more unified visual identity across the lineup, which includes Very Small Batch, Triple-Rye, Reserve 8-Year-Old, and Ocean Aged at Sea. The refreshed 750ml bottles are rolling out now at retailers, bars, and restaurants nationwide, with 375ml, 1L, and 1.75L formats following later this year.
Getting specific is a real shift

Jefferson’s has spent nearly three decades positioning itself as the experimental, boundary-pushing alternative to bourbon brands that lean on tradition and precise numbers. Aging whiskey at sea, blending across dozens of barrel ages into one NAS bottle, finishing in wine casks: all of that fits a brand whose whole pitch is “we don’t play by the usual rules,” age statements included.
That’s exactly why the new 8-Year label on Reserve is worth paying attention to. It’s a small move on paper, but it runs against the brand’s own instincts, trading some of that deliberate mystique for a number a bourbon geek can actually hold onto.
It also tracks with a pattern that has popped up a lot this year: distilleries with maturing stock finally feel comfortable putting real numbers on bottles, whether that’s Four Roses reaching back further than ever for its Limited Edition or Sagamore inching toward full transparency about where its whiskey comes from.
