If your knowledge of Jack Daniel’s doesn’t go beyond Old No. 7, you might not realize that this iconic Tennessee-based brand is making some outstanding, innovative whiskeys. The newest release in its experimental Distillery Series line is Sweet Mash Tennessee Straight Whiskey.

Jack Daniel’s Sweet Mash Tennessee Straight Whiskey

Also known as Distillery Series Selection #15, this expression features the same mash bill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% that makes up all the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskeys. It’s made with a sweet mash kickstart as opposed to the usual sour mash which will be used for the rest of the distilling season. After distilling, it began maturing in oak barrels in 2016 on the top floors of Track 2 barrelhouses at Jack Daniel’s Distillery where it remained for nearly nine years before being batched and bottled at a potent 117-proof.

According to Jack Daniel’s, the result is a complex, memorable whiskey centered on flavors like butterscotch, candied pecans, berries, and toffee.

“Our Distillery Series has experimented with every step in the whiskey making process from grain bill to barreling, and this release showcases yet another lever that we can pull and tweak here at the Jack Daniel Distillery,” Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller said.

“What excites me about this release is the complexity and richness that has emerged from a little extra time in the right places in our barrelhouses.”

Where can I buy it?

At the beginning of this October, this limited-edition whiskey will be available exclusively at select Tennessee whiskey retailers and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery for the suggested retail price of $44.99 for a 375ml bottle.

The best beers from California you can buy anywhere
California is more than just IPAs
Sierra Nevada

Currently, more than 9,000 breweries of all sizes operate in the US. That’s an awful lot of IPAs, stouts, and lagers to choose from. Some states are more saturated with breweries (per capita) than others. This includes places like Vermont, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, and, of course, California. While I could take a deep dive into all the biggest beer-producing states, today is all about The Golden State.

I have a special affinity for California beer, and it’s because of one style in particular. Sure, you can find a beer style to fit every palate in the state, but in California, the IPA reigns supreme. In fact, if you look at almost any list ranking the best beers in the state, it will be littered with IPA options. While I often imbibe pilsners and other lagers (as well as wheat beers and other lighter beers) in the summer as well as stouts and porters (and other dark beers) in the winter, I always go back to the classic West Coast IPA.
