When it comes to whiskey, there aren’t many names bigger than Jack Daniel’s. And while the brand is most known for its iconic Old No. 7, if you sleep on its limited releases you’re really missing out on some outstanding expressions. The newest is a new special release barrel proof rye whiskey.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Tanyard Hill Rye

It’s called Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Tanyard Hill Rye, and it was matured in the one of the oldest barrelhouses at the Lynchburg, Tennessee-based distillery. It entered new handmade American oak barrels in November of 2015 and matured at Barrel House 1 on top of Tanyard Hill, one of four barrelhouse that were built in the 1960s.

This special release is made with a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. Like all the whiskeys produced by the popular distillery, it’s charcoal filtered using the Lincoln County Process before aging. This barrel proof expression ranges in proof between 130.2 – 148.8 Proof based on the batch.

According to the brand, it begins with a nose of dark fruit, oaky wood, candied mint, dark chocolate, and baking spices. The finish is a mix of clove, pipe tobacco, and rich oak.

“The Special Release series has been a great way for us to showcase our craft of whiskey making here in Lynchburg,” Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Chris Fletcher says.

“We’re fortunate to have barrel houses at so many unique locations that produce deep, rich, and complex whiskeys. Like Coy Hill was before, Tanyard Hill has been one of the hidden gems for locals familiar with the distillery grounds. We’re now bringing more people into this secret and can’t wait to see what our friends think of this special Tennessee Rye Whiskey.”

Where can I find it?

This special release rye whiskey is available at select whiskey retailers throughout the US this month for the suggested retail price of $79.99 for a 700ml bottle.

The best beers from California you can buy anywhere
California is more than just IPAs
Sierra Nevada

Currently, more than 9,000 breweries of all sizes operate in the US. That’s an awful lot of IPAs, stouts, and lagers to choose from. Some states are more saturated with breweries (per capita) than others. This includes places like Vermont, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, and, of course, California. While I could take a deep dive into all the biggest beer-producing states, today is all about The Golden State.

I have a special affinity for California beer, and it’s because of one style in particular. Sure, you can find a beer style to fit every palate in the state, but in California, the IPA reigns supreme. In fact, if you look at almost any list ranking the best beers in the state, it will be littered with IPA options. While I often imbibe pilsners and other lagers (as well as wheat beers and other lighter beers) in the summer as well as stouts and porters (and other dark beers) in the winter, I always go back to the classic West Coast IPA.
