If you didn’t know it already, September is Bourbon Heritage Month. The weather is getting cooler, and the leaves are starting to fall. It’s the perfect time to crack open a bottle of bourbon whiskey. Lucky for you, the folks at Kansas City’s J. Rieger & Co. have the perfect bottle for you to start the month off right.

Rieger Private Stock 10-Year Straight Bourbon Whiskey

The award-winning distillery that revived one of the most beloved pre-Prohibition whiskey brands recently announced that it was launching its first-ever 10-year-old straight bourbon whiskey. It’s called “Private Stock,” and it was crafted to pay tribute to the whiskey brand’s storied history. This soon-to-be highly sought-after expression is limited to only 300 bottles, so you better act fast if you want one.

The first of a series of quarterly, distillery-exclusive whiskeys, Rieger Private Stock 10-Year Straight Bourbon Whiskey was named after the 1927 federal court ruling that allowed the Rieger family to take all of their personal whiskey from the closed-down J. Rieger & Co. Distillery to their own home during Prohibition. Hence the name “Private Stock”.

This 10-year-old whiskey definitely isn’t private to the Rieger family, as it’s being made available to the public at the distillery beginning September 19^th. Like all of Rieger’s whiskeys, it’s made with a sweet mash fermentation and distilled in a combination of column and pot stills before being matured for at least a decade.

“This isn’t manufactured scarcity. This release utilizes the only three 10-year-old barrels we currently have in our inventory.” Master Distiller Nathan Perry says.

“It felt important to both honor the history of American Whiskey and the Rieger name by sharing our 10-year Bourbon under the historic ‘Private Stock’ label during National Bourbon Heritage Month.”

“Our goal has always been to build a collection of exceptional whiskeys that are impeccably made, fairly priced, and true to our legacy,” adds Andy Rieger, president and co-owner of J. Rieger & Co.

“Rieger Straight Bourbon is a founding pillar of that vision, and this limited 10-year release showcases what patience, craftsmanship, and our unique approach can bring. We could not be more excited to share this with whiskey fans.”

Every journey has to start somewhere. No bourbon beginner knows everything about the whiskey style. Even if they read a book or two, there’s always more to learn. A book can’t actually smell and taste the spirit for you, can it? You need to refine your palate by sampling different bourbons over many years. You also don’t start your bourbon exploration by knowing every term and measurement. A good example is the term “proof”.

When I first started sampling whiskey more than twenty years ago, I would see a spirit listed as 80-proof or 90-proof and not really know what it meant. After a bit of research, I learned that a whiskey’s “proof” is double its alcohol by volume. That means that if a whiskey is 40% ABV, it would be listed as 80-proof. A 45% ABV spirit is 90-proof. Seems pretty simple, right?
