Scotch prices have been creeping up all year on tariff pressure, and even though the worst is over (for now), it’s hard to reverse a trend like that even though the tariff’s gone. Nobody told Isle of Skye that, apparently: they just released a new bottle of 10-year-old liquid for under thirty bucks.
With a price tag of $27.99, Ian Macleod Distillers, the Edinburgh-based company behind the brand, is betting that the new expression can get the Scotch-curious into tasting a genuinely aged whisky carrying the softening appeal of rum.
The aptly-named Rum Cask Finish takes the brand’s existing 10-Year-Old blend and sends it through an additional finishing period in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. It’s a move that’s become increasingly common across Scotch in recent years but still shows up rarely on aged, blended expressions like this one.
Brand Ambassador Gordon Dallas said the goal wasn’t to make a rum-flavored Scotch, but to use the rum casks to amplify character already present in the blend. I got to try some of the liquid, and I have to agree — the cask-finish is definitely present, but at the end of the day, this is still a Scotch (and a flavorful one, at that).
Rum cask finishes usually cost more than this

Rum cask-finishing some Scotch has become a popular move across the category, and one of the things that can happen when things get popular is that they also get a little pricey.
Some examples: Nick Offerman and Lagavulin’s Caribbean Rum Cask Finish, an 11-year single malt, which goes for $89. Glenfiddich’s rum-finished Gran Reserva, aged 21 years, runs well past $200. Even Glenfiddich’s more accessible Fire & Cane, a no-age-statement experimental release, still lands at $49.99, near double what Isle of Skye is charging here.
That’s not to dismiss any of these releases, but Isle of Skye is arguing that it’s possible to get this kind of juice on the market, with an age statement attached, at an accessible price point.
While we’re here, one note: Isle of Skye Whisky is named after the island, but it’s not a distillery actually located there — that’s Talisker and Torabhaig. The whisky in question is blended and bottled by Edinburgh’s Ian Macleod Distillers, taking inspiration from the island rather than actual liquid.
