From viral TikToks of croissant-and-coffee setups to Gen Z’s new “home café” rituals, U.S. consumers are now embracing a “home café culture” inspired by European bakery culture. This trend focuses on indulgent, yet accessible rituals, offering a moment of respite or escapism from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

With a focus on bringing a slower café experience to home and rising coffee shop prices forcing coffee drinkers and cafe visitors to get creative, experts say the home café culture trend is redefining 2025. Here’s how.

Why home cafés are booming in 2025

Though it feels like ages ago now, the pandemic era drove huge shifts in consumer behavior. According to Kayleigh Swift, U.S. Brand Manager for St Pierre Bakery, the pandemic caused many to go without the “little luxuries of out-of-home occasions, and in doing so, the desire and demand for premium at-home alternatives increased.”

“France – and Paris in particular — carries a real romanticism for U.S. consumers. What many US shoppers know about Paris doesn’t come from firsthand experiences. The idea of ‘escapism’ or the ability to transport yourself to Paris through food really resonates with consumers here, because for many, European travel is not something they have experienced. Good food is more than just a meal on a plate – it’s a memory and it’s a moment captured,” she shares.

This trend creates a coffee shop or cafe environment at home, bringing people together while also allowing for customization.

Driving forces behind the home café movement

A variety of factors are at play, driving the home café movement, from TikTok and social media aesthetic culture to bakery innovation and affordable luxury. The “home café” tag has become a movement across social media, with creators styling brioche, croissants, and barista-worthy drinks into daily rituals that feel luxurious but approachable. According to Swift, social media undoubtedly plays a role in the adoption of this movement for Gen-Zers.

In addition, with coffee shop prices surging in 2025, 70% of coffee drinkers now brew at home daily.

“Pairing café-style pastries with at-home lattes brings the indulgent vibe folks are striving for without the $8 price tag,” says Swift.

Additionally, bakery innovation and viral hybrids like “cruffins” help make at-home indulgence easier, fueling the trend into 2026. Lifestyle crossover trends like “café nights in” shared on social media help blur the line between everyday eating and aspirational lifestyle content.

“The cost of eating out has gone up universally, and sometimes that’s just the world we live in. What’s more important to consider is the consumer perception of ‘value’. If dining out is about the shared experience, but you can create the same experience at home by spending slightly more on premium products in the supermarket, then that provides better value for a cost-conscious consumer,” says Swift.

How to bring this trend home

According to Swift, bringing the home café trend home has never been easier.

“Make a date – either with friends or with yourself – and commit to enjoying a meal. It doesn’t have to be fancy or take a lot of effort, but just make one upgrade to an ingredient or a few ingredients, take the time to enjoy your food, and see how you feel afterwards,” Swift shares.

Swift says the trend is all about making the most of every moment, embracing each moment, and remaining present to savor each meal.

The concept of the “home café” trend is not necessairly one that is always French-themed, but rather a lifestyle shift.

“The idea that we’re taking time to eat well and embracing those moments in our everyday lives where we can switch off and enjoy good food can only be positive. It’s been gaining momentum for the past five years, so I’d wager it’s going to stick around long-term,” Swift shares.
