Elijah Craig is a name that often comes up in whiskey history books. There’s a legend that the former Baptist preacher invented what we now know as bourbon in 1789 when he decided to age his corn whiskey in charred oak barrels. Whether or not that story is true or simply advertising doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the whiskey that bears his name is one of the best on the market. That’s why I was so ecstatic when I learned this popular brand would be launching a new, long-aged single barrel bourbon.

Available for only a limited time, Elijah Craig 21-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon joins Elijah Craig’s Single Barrel lineup alongside 15-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon and 18-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon. It was first launched on June 14th, in celebration of National Bourbon Day.

After spending more than two decades aging in charred oak barrels, you better believe this expression is something special. According to the brand, the result is a nuanced, memorable whiskey loaded with flavors like milk chocolate, toasted nuts, burnt caramel, aged oak, molasses candy, barrel char, and peppery spice at the finish. This is the type of whiskey that deserves to be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or with a splash or two of water to open up the aromas and flavors.

“Elijah Craig 21-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon is a sophisticated, more mature sibling to our vaunted Single Barrel collection and becomes our oldest age statement currently available,” Conor O’Driscoll, Master Distiller at Elijah Craig Bourbon, says.

“Our fans have been waiting for a new 20-year-plus-aged release, and this won’t disappoint. Expect the signature warm spice that Elijah Craig is known for, with new layers that reveal the transformative power of extended maturation.”

Elijah Craig 21-Year-Old Single Barrel is available exclusively at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience in Bardstown, Kentucky for the suggested retail price of $299.99 for a 750ml bottle. If you want to add this special release to your collection, you’ll have to find a way to get the Blue Grass State soon because Heaven Hill is only releasing 1,789 bottles (to pay tribute to the year Elijah Craig invented bourbon) of this unique expression.

Bib & Tucker is releasing its first bottled-in-bond bourbon, and the Columbia, Tennessee brand went well past what the designation actually asks for.

Bottled-in-bond is one of the oldest and strictest standards in American whiskey. The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 requires that a whiskey be distilled in a single season by a single distiller at a single distillery, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. No wiggle room on any of it.
