The forgotten fall spirit: Why it’s time to rediscover Brandy

Move over, bourbon — there’s a new sweater-weather sip in town

Somewhere between whiskey’s swagger and rum’s easy charm, brandy has been quietly gathering dust on the back shelf of America’s liquor cabinets. It’s the spirit your grandparents might have sipped after dinner, the one you vaguely associate with Christmas puddings, crystal snifters, and maybe a cigar you didn’t actually want. But here’s the thing: Brandy deserves better than our collective amnesia — especially in the fall.

What is Brandy?

Brandy is, at its core, distilled wine (or other fermented fruit juice), which means it carries a natural warmth and fruitiness that plays beautifully with autumn flavors. Apple pie, roasted nuts, baking spices, caramelized pears — these are Brandy’s playground. It’s equally at home in a cozy nightcap as it is in a lively, citrusy cocktail, making it one of the most versatile bottles you can have on hand when the weather turns crisp.

And unlike certain “seasonal” spirits (looking at you, pumpkin spice vodka), brandy doesn’t need a gimmick. It’s been perfecting its craft for centuries.

Bottles to get you started

Korbel Brandy

Korbel is the weeknight sweater of Brandy — approachable, reliable, and perfectly cozy without trying too hard. At about $15, it’s the bottle you don’t feel bad about splashing into cocktails or spiking a batch of hot cider for friends. Expect notes of vanilla, caramel, and gentle fruit that make it a perfect entry point.

Germain-Robin

Germain-Robin shows just how good American craft brandy can be. Born in California from wine grapes and mellowed in oak, it’s smooth and complex, with whispers of dried fruit, spice, and a soft floral note that lingers. At about $45, it’s pricier than Korbel but still far shy of most high-end whiskeys and every bit as satisfying.

Hennessy VSOP Cognac

Cognac is simply brandy made in the Cognac region of France, crafted under some of the strictest standards in the spirits world. Hennessy’s VSOP is a classic for a reason — rich, rounded, and touched with spice. It’s the bottle you reach for when you want to impress without making a big show of it. Sip it neat, or stir it into a cocktail that gives its complexity room to shine.

Brandy Smash

A Brandy Smash is what I make when I’m not ready to give up fresh, bright flavors, but the air says otherwise. I’ll crush a little mint and a few lemon wedges with sugar until it all smells amazing, pour in a good hit of brandy, and shake it over ice. The first sip is zippy and green, then the brandy wraps it all in this slow, golden warmth that feels exactly like the turn from late summer to early fall.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz brandy

  • 4–5 fresh mint leaves

  • 2 lemon wedges

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • Ice

Instructions:

  1. In a shaker, muddle the mint, lemon wedges, and sugar until fragrant and juicy.

  2. Add brandy and fill the shaker with ice.

  3. Shake well and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

  4. Garnish with a mint sprig or lemon twist.

Warm Brandy Apple Toddy

This is the hot toddy’s easygoing cousin. Simply warm up apple cider with a cinnamon stick until the whole house smells like fall, pour it into a mug, add a big splash of brandy, and finish with a slice of lemon and a drizzle of honey. It’s the kind of drink that makes you sink a little deeper into your chair and forget you ever planned on raking those leaves.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup apple cider

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1½ oz brandy

  • 1 lemon slice

  • 1 tsp honey

Instructions:

  1. Warm apple cider in a saucepan with the cinnamon stick until hot but not boiling.

  2. Pour the cider into a mug.

  3. Stir in the brandy, honey, and squeeze in the lemon slice.

  4. Garnish with an extra cinnamon stick or lemon wheel if desired.

Fall Brandy Sour

Forget the whiskey sour for a moment. Brandy’s fruitiness makes for an incredibly smooth sour. Shake brandy, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and an egg white for that creamy texture. Garnish with a dash of cinnamon or a thin apple slice. It’s autumn in a coupe glass.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz brandy

  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice

  • ½ oz simple syrup

  • 1 egg white

  • Dash of ground cinnamon (for garnish)

  • Thin apple slice (optional garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Add brandy, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white to a shaker.

  2. Dry shake (no ice) for 15 seconds to emulsify.

  3. Add ice and shake again until well chilled.

  4. Strain into a coupe glass.

  5. Garnish with a dash of cinnamon or apple slice.

Brandy might not have the marketing muscle of bourbon or the trendiness of mezcal, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a spirit that asks you to slow down, savor, and maybe even light that candle you’ve been “saving.” This fall, give brandy a second look. You might just wonder why you ever forgot it in the first place.
