New Music Monday: Small Feet

SmallFeet_FromFarEnoughAway_1500px_300dpi_RGBSmall Feet will release their debut album Friday, August 7th, 2015. Titled From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like the Ocean, the record will be released through Barsuk. Small Feet is the project of Swedish musician Simon Stålhamre, though it took encouragement from American ex-pat Jacob Snavely to get Stålhamre to focus on his music. Before the band recorded their debut, the Swede had already worked as a nurse, a fly-poster, and at a cafe.

Having dropped out of school at fifteen, Stålhamre learned English through television as he began to build up a catalogue of songs. However, the songwriter found himself becoming consistently more reclusive and reluctant to share his music. It took Snavely’s encouragement and the inheritance of a cabin in central Stockholm to give Stålhamre the kick he needed to properly record and release his music. Finally encouraged, Stålhamre got Snavely to play bass on the record and recruited drummer Christopher Cantillo to round out the trio.

Given the story leading up to From Far Enough Away’s release, listeners might expect a dark, dour record from Stålhamre and company, but Small Feet provide nothing of the sort. It is not as if there is no darkness to be found on From Far Enough Away, but it reveals itself less as an overbearing feeling and a place the band has left. It provides a backdrop to Small Feet’s music, never quite becoming the theme of the music.

Stålhamre’s voice, reminiscent of Neil Young or Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, may be the most powerful tool in Small Feet’s arsenal to lift the band from any gloom otherwise found in the songs. The Swede has a powerful voice that uses he to lead the listener through From Far Enough Away as delicate melodies.

After a serious time of doubt for Stålhamre, Small Feet’s From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like the Ocean is a self-assured debut and a sign of good things to come from the songwriter.

From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like the Ocean is available for preorder on Amazon, iTunes,  and Barsuk.

Paul Giamatti in Black Mirror

Black Mirror started its life as a niche science fiction anthology show on Netflix, but the British series expanded its reach and popularity as the episodes started to blend into contemporary world issues more and more. It's no secret that the world we live in keeps getting scarier, whether that be due to the upheaval in politics or the uncertainty of artificial intelligence and climate change altering our world forever. Good TV's ability to mirror real life makes it culturally relevant, and it leaves fans craving even more of it.

With fans waiting patiently to find out if Black Mirror season 8 will be greenlit at Netflix, there are several alternatives that you can check out after finishing season 7. Not all of these series are as daring about social issues or crafted in the same way as Black Mirror, but all of them have the same sci-fi principles that make the storytelling unique. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in Miami Vice.

Miami Vice is coming back to the big screen. Almost 20 years after Michael Mann adapted the '80s series to the big screen, Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a new adaptation of the film. Universal Pictures will produce the film, which is being adapted by Dan Gilroy.

Plot details for the movie are not yet available, but the original series follows a pair of detectives who work undercover in South Florida. Mann was involved in both the original series and the first theatrical adaptation, which starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. That movie was a box office bomb and received mixed reviews at the time, but has since become something of a cult film in certain circles.
