The U.S. State Department has issued a new Level 2 travel advisory for Mauritius, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime concerns. The advisory was released on December 8 and applies to the popular island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa.
Known for its turquoise lagoons and luxury resorts, Mauritius is a longtime favorite among honeymooners, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers seeking a laid-back tropical escape. While the destination remains open and welcoming to visitors, U.S. officials say travelers should stay alert, especially in busy tourist areas.
What travelers should know before visiting Mauritius

According to the State Department, most crimes involving foreign visitors in Mauritius are crimes of opportunity. These include pickpocketing, purse snatchings, and petty theft, particularly in crowded outdoor shopping areas, popular beaches, and near ATMs. Officials also note that more serious crimes do occur, including break-ins and violent crimes such as serious assaults, rape, and, in rare cases, murder.
Women traveling alone are advised to take extra precautions, as verbal harassment and other targeted crimes have been reported. Travelers are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid displaying signs of wealth like expensive jewelry or watches, and use caution when walking or driving at night. The State Department also advises visitors not to physically resist during robbery attempts and to avoid answering hotel or residence doors unless they know who is on the other side.
For added safety, travelers are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which provides real-time updates and allows U.S. embassies to assist more easily in an emergency. Reviewing the country’s security report, checking the CDC’s travel health guidance, and purchasing comprehensive travel insurance are also strongly recommended.
