Time Out has spoken, and Chicago’s Avondale is officially the coolest neighborhood in the U.S. The global travel and culture brand just unveiled its annual list of the 39 coolest neighborhoods in the world, and this Northwest Side gem snagged the top American spot.
Long known for its Polish and Latino heritage, Avondale, nicknamed “Bricktown” for its historic brickyards, offers both old-school grit and a fresh creative energy. Red-brick warehouses now house award-winning breweries, low-key taprooms, and a growing roster of inventive restaurants.
Visitors can sip prize-winning beers at Revolution Brewing, grab the legendary Iron Maiden burger at Kuma’s Corner, or catch a show at the hip venue Sleeping Village. Historic landmarks like St. Hyacinth Basilica sit alongside cozy coffee shops and trendy bars, creating a neighborhood that feels timeless.
Other American neighborhoods that made the list

While international destinations dominated Time Out’s 2025 rankings, a handful of U.S. standouts still earned a coveted spot. Red Hook, New York secured its place with a waterfront setting on the southwestern edge of Brooklyn. Once a hub of shipping and industry, the neighborhood now balances its gritty, historic charm with artsy cafés, small-batch distilleries, and fantastic harbor views.
Little River, Miami, crowned Miami’s coolest neighborhood for the second year running, continues to lure creatives with its raw, industrial spaces, Michelin-starred dining, and lower rents just north of Wynwood and the Design District.
In Texas, Clarksville, Austin impresses with leafy streets, multi-million-dollar cottages, and an elegant, small-town feel just outside downtown. Out west, Glen Park, San Francisco offers an escape in the heart of the city, anchored by 66-acre Glen Canyon Park, where spring wildflowers, free-flowing creeks, and even roaming coyotes create a unique urban wilderness.
