Just in time for Veterans Day, Frankfort, Kentucky’s J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery is releasing the fifth edition of its popular Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) Bourbon. The whiskey gets its name from the Combat Infantry Badges, which are awarded to Army Infantry and Special Forces soldiers with the rank of Colonel and below who were engaged in active ground combat during their military service.

It’s more than just a whiskey to honor combat veterans; it’s also made for a good cause. A portion of the sales for every bottle of this annual release is donated to military nonprofit charities. This year, the charity is Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals Warrier Foundation, which honors veterans, wounded soldiers, and their families.

The whiskey matured for five years using the brand’s proprietary double staving process, giving the whiskey more exposure to charred barrel staves than regular barrel aging. According to the distillery, the whiskey is filled with flavors like pie crust, dried apples, cinnamon roasted malt, vanilla beans, baking spices, prunes, and currents. The finish is a warming, extended mix of caramel and stone fruit.

“The Mattingly family has several family members who are current or former military service personnel, as well as some of our team members we work with every day at the Distillery,” Harry Richart, president of J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery, said in a press release. “It’s really important for us to give back to our community and we’re honored we have such great fans of our products which allows us to give back a portion of our sales from some of our special releases to very worthy causes.”

Each bourbon included was matured for at least three years in toasted and charred oak barrels. It's then infused with more than 140 pounds of dried persimmons. But that's not all.
