Bulleit Frontier Whiskey is launching a limited-release bourbon made with mesquite wood-smoked malt

The worlds of smoked whiskey and bourbon whiskey are coming together thanks to the creative minds at Bulleit Frontier Whiskey. Recently, the iconic Kentucky-based brand announced the release of a new, limited-edition expression made with an experimental mash bill.

Bulleit Bourbon Mesquite Smoked Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

It’s called Bulleit Bourbon Mesquite Smoked Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and it features a mash bill of 65% corn, 30% mesquite smoked malt, and 5% malted barley. It was distilled in 2018 and matured for at least six years before being pulled from the barrel in 2025. A perfect whiskey for barbecue fans, it’s bottled at a potent 93-proof.

According to Bulleit, the result is a complex, multi-layered expression filled with flavors like candied vanilla, caramelized sugar, oak, and mesquite smoke. It’s best enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into your favorite whiskey-based cocktail to add a touch of sweet, smoky flavor.

“It’s important to note that while this release is a first-of-its-kind spirit for the brand, it is not a flavored whiskey,” Phil Gelineau, Whiskey R&D Manager at Bulleit, says.

“The subtle smokiness comes from the mesquite wood-smoked malt used in the mashbill. As it has aged, those notes have rounded into something richer and more complex, with layers of brown sugar, caramel, and real depth of body. The mesquite character lingers on top, giving it a smooth yet distinctive smoky finish.”

How high in ABV can a mass-market tequila get? Herradura is looking to find out, with the return of Directo de Alambique, an unaged, still-strength expression bottled at 110 proof at Casa Herradura in Amatitán, Jalisco.
