In a motley mash-up of golf, sailing, and rum, Mount Gay has partnered with Devereux Golf on a new limited-edition menswear collection. The Mount Gay x Devereux Golf Course Collection features polos, T-shirts, hats, and golf bags in Mount Gay’s signature red and gold hues. Mount Gay has been the official rum of several PGA tournaments, so this latest collaboration with Devereux feels natural.
Mount Gay is my favorite sipping rum. I even visited the distillery in St. Lucy during a press trip to Barbados—a highlight of a trip full of highlights. Founded in 1703, Mount Gay is the world’s oldest continuously operating rum distillery. It’s currently helmed by Barbados’ first female Master Blender, Trudiann Branker.
A few felicitous quirks make Mount Gay stand out among rums. Barbados is a coral island rather than a volcanic island like Jamaica or Martinique. Much like Kentucky’s limestone aquifers so touted by the bourbon industry, Barbados’ coral aquifers filter water to remarkable purity. As with Scotch distilleries, Mount Gay uses traditional copper pot stills to make a deeply complex distillate. The rum matures in carefully selected bourbon and Cognac casks. If you get the chance, try Black Barrel or XO. Both burst with notes of pipe tobacco, baking spice, and tropical fruit—rums that rival my favorite Scotches for complexity.
While Mount Gay has recently become a fixture in professional golf, the brand’s deepest sporting roots lie in sailing. For decades, it has sponsored major international regattas, and its iconic red cap is synonymous with competitive sailing.
I’ll pass on the golf, but fine rum and menswear? Now we’re talking.

I am less familiar with Devereux Golf, mainly because my interest in golf is limited to Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore. Still, even a non-golfer can respect good design. Founded by brothers Robert and Will Brunner, Devereux crafts utilitarian golf attire with a keen eye for fashion. Their clothes keep you cool on the links and cool-looking at the 19th hole. As much as I admire golf’s partnerships with luxury brands, I have no plans to take up the sport myself. If you do catch me at a country club, I’ll be the guy at the bar decked out in Devereux, draining a Mount Gay daiquiri, and quoting Caddy Shack lines to a group of divorcees.
