Downtown San Antonio’s newest luxury hotel brings butterfly-inspired design and dazzling public art to the historic River Walk

The Monarch San Antonio invested $185 million into its property, and the decadence shows.

San Antonio is one of the best places to visit in Texas. You can parade through the annual Fiesta celebration or kick back in a tasting room sipping wines from the neighboring Hill Country—there’s something for every traveling style. Staying downtown provides access to the top attractions, and The Monarch San Antonio is the newest addition worth considering for your next stay.

The Monarch first opened its doors on March 3, 2026, and sits just steps away from the historic Alamo, Riverwalk strip, and Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The hotel was no small effort, with over $185 million invested into the luxury property. I made a visit just one week after the inaugural opening, and others had the same idea, as the hotel was nearly at capacity by the time of my stay.

So how does The Monarch San Antonio stand out in a city filled with exceptional hotels like the charming Hotel Emma or the elegant St. Anthony Hotel? While these properties are pillars of the Lone Star State’s historic side, the Monarch does something different — brings a contemporary edge to the downtown strip.

The Monarch San Antonio experience

Just beyond the front doors of The Monarch San Antonio, there’s a feeling of expansiveness. The building’s opulent yet effortless atrium is tall and open, with curved wooden arches that dance like ribbons on the ceiling. Diffused sun pours in through floor-to-ceiling windows and there’s a soft chatter of guests in the lobby bar.

The concierge team is attentive and the check-in process was downright pleasant. I sipped on a glass of sparkling champagne and chatted with the front desk while they quietly arranged the details of my stay. A staff member guided me to my room and provided a walkthrough of all its amenities.

The welcoming staff set the tone for the rest of my visit, where I felt pampered and logistically supported every step of the way.

Rooms

The Monarch is outfitted with 200 rooms and 28 suites. My 332-square-foot room offered sweeping park views from a wall of windows, as well as a deck, perfect for watching the conveniently timed Tejano Music Awards concert in Hemisfair Park.

My room was full of customized sculptural elements. The plush bed’s backboard stretched into the organic shape of a butterfly wing. High-end tech like smart controls and an interactive large-screen television made navigating the lights, reception, and room service a breeze.

The bathroom was as elegant as the main space, with soft backlit lighting, a spacious walk-in shower, and premium stone tiles. The hotel provides cozy slippers and robes that made me feel like I was wrapped up in a blanket even after pulling myself away from my cozy king bed.

Spa

The Monarch San Antonio’s spa services are beyond exceptional, and I experienced one of the best massages of my life during my visit. There was no rush. My therapist was deeply attentive, and I walked away with a full range of motion in every part of my body. No table strain, soreness, or grogginess, I was ready to enjoy the rest of my day.

The Monarch’s relaxation lounge adds ambiance to the experience with plush loungers, water, and tea, letting guests pause and absorb the benefits of their treatments. Spa and beauty products are sold on-site, convenient for visitors who left anything at home or want to level up their self-care collection.

After your treatment, I recommend taking a dip in the adjacent rooftop pool, drenched in Texan sun and surrounded by panoramic views of downtown San Antonio. With poolside drink and food service, it’s easy to spend an afternoon here.

If massages, clay body wraps, and facials aren’t your thing, consider their state-of-the-art gym, filled with brand-new cardio, strength training, and restorative equipment.

Dining

San Antonio is one of the best U.S. cities for foodies to visit and earned its UNESCO title as a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017. The Monarch San Antonio knew it needed to curate exceptional menus to compete with the strong culinary scene and enlisted executive chef Jae H. Lee to ensure each dish met a high standard.

My thoughts after having a taste in each one? Monarch’s menus truly deliver. These restaurants don’t replace San Antonio’s standout Tex-Mex eateries and fine dining institutions but make for a perfect counterpoint for guests who choose to eat on-site.

The star of the show is the Monarch’s rooftop restaurant, an indoor-outdoor spot with downtown views from a 17-story vantage. Aleteo, which roughly translates to “flutter” in Spanish, features dishes like dry-aged duck and salsa flights, rooted in Yucatán cuisine.

Oak & Amber sits just beyond the reception lounge, focusing on dry-aged steaks, caviar service, and decadent seafood towers. Dinner feels like a show in this venue, with tableside carving and thoughtful beverage pairings.

For a substantial morning bite, the Necartie Cafe offers various espresso drinks, breakfast plates, and freshly baked pastries until 4pm each day.

La Mariposa

The Monarch San Antonio’s main attraction is a benefit for both guests and the larger San Antonio community. The hotel built the 4,000-square-foot La Mariposa, a sculptural pavilion that’s part art, part gathering space in downtown’s Hemisfair Park. The structure sits just steps from the property, with towering stained glass Monarch butterfly wings that gracefully slope to form an open-air shelter. The $2 million public art installation houses over three miles of LED lighting, and at night, the sculpture emits a warm glow.

Pair your visit with customized activities

The biggest impression I was left with after my stay at The Monarch San Antonio was the quality of the staff. Their warm smiles, helpful words and relatable jokes were only part of the story. The concierges are trained on much more than bedside manner and know how to help you with anything you need—from learning how to make the most out of your accommodation to helping you curate luxurious excursions.

You can reach out to the concierge team before your visit to coordinate your experience. The front desk phone number is best, and they’ll transfer you to the concierge desk. The property is unique in having two certified Les Clefs d’Or concierges to tailor everything to your preferences. Guests can plan a historic tour of the nearby Alamo or sit courtside for a local Spurs game, as well as arrange airport-to-door transfers to and from the property.

I opted for a scenic helicopter ride to the stunning William Chris Vineyard, a property in the neighboring Hill Country that made it onto the world’s best 50 vineyards list. We departed from the Million Air airport, cruised for thirty minutes over meandering lakes and forest, and received a warm greeting and glass of bubbles upon arrival. I’m no stranger to Texan wine and felt their flights were some of the most exceptional in the region.

Final thoughts

With so many options at hand, it was a challenge to experience everything The Monarch San Antonio had to offer in a short weekend visit. But I never felt rushed or wanting for more, as the team created a flow that made me feel I was making the most out of every moment.

So does the hotel reflect the $185 million investment that preceded its opening? Absolutely. The property offers luxurious amenities one would expect, but also so much more—it provides an opportunity for both visitors and locals to interact and embrace the spirit of San Antonio—which to me, is the purpose of the hospitality industry when it’s getting it right.

I spent 72 hours in London with only a carry-on. Here’s how I did it in style
Luxury travel doesn't require a checked bag
London

Somewhere between the baggage claim carousel and the Elizabeth Line, I realized I'd already won. As passengers from my Norwegian flight to London crowded around the conveyor belt waiting for checked luggage to appear, I was already on my way into the city. Twenty minutes later, I was headed toward central London with nothing more than a carry-on suitcase and a backpack. I've become a bit of a carry-on evangelist over the past few years. Not because I'm trying to prove some minimalist point or because I enjoy seeing how few shirts I can survive with. I just genuinely think it's the better way to travel, especially for a long weekend in Europe.

My recent 72-hour trip from Copenhagen to London wasn't exactly a backpacker's itinerary. It included a stay at one of London's nicest luxury hotels, rooftop cocktails, dinners worth dressing up for, and plenty of walking through Soho, Covent Garden, and the rest of central London. Somehow, everything I needed fit inside my Travelpro Platinum Elite Slim Cabin Hardshell Spinner V2, with a backpack holding my flight essentials.

Want to feel like a lad watching England vs. Norway in New York City? The London is where it’s at
The quarterfinals are here. The London's where you should be.
Flag, Plant, City

The last quarterfinal games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup are here. England-Norway kicks things off in Miami before Argentina-Switzerland caps the day's action in Kansas City. One of the best things to come out of the World Cup has been the atmosphere these fans have provided at each city they've visited. We saw the amazing vibes out of Mexico City last week when England fans visited. Before the game, England fans partied and went toe-to-toe with Mexicans at bars everywhere. I know because I was there at The Dog House Pub.

After England beat Mexico in a classic Round of 16 game, fans flooded the streets and partied. We celebrated with England fans until the wee hours of the morning. If you have a serious case of FOMO, you need not worry. You can still catch good vibes and feel like a lad watching England-Norway at The London, A Luxury Collection Hotel, in New York City.
