As the countdown to Spring Break begins, new Booking.com data suggests travelers are locking in their plans sooner than ever — and changing up their desired destinations. U.S. travelers are now looking beyond typical beach destinations, showing a rising interest in international cities and Southern hotspots.
Spring breakers seeking international city escapes are now looking at vibrant escapes like London, Madrid, and Rome for spring break, whereas those seeking southern getaways are headed to Nashville and Atlanta. Angela Cavis, Director of Communications, Americas at Booking.com, shares her thoughts on these changing spring break 2026 travel trends below.
Shifting away from traditional beach destinations

Per Booking.com’s most recent data, international cities that are seeing major growth include many big cities like Rome and London. Cavis says the shift away from traditional beach destinations may reflect travelers desire to balance seasonal demand and costs while still prioritizing destinations that offer a rich mix of food, culture, and history.
“In addition to London and Rome, cities like Madrid (+83%), Tokyo (+22%), and Paris (+29%) are also seeing strong interest from U.S. travelers. For many travelers, these cities can offer a lot to experience within a relatively short trip, which may also make them particularly appealing for a Spring Break getaway,” she shares. These cities appeal to U.S. travelers, offering a strong mix of culture, food, history, and walkable neighborhoods, while also offering many of the world’s most popular attractions. “For Spring Break in particular, these types of cities can offer a lot to see and do in a relatively short trip, which is part of the appeal,” says Cavis.
While both city escapes and traditional beach vacations still remain in high demand, Cavis says travelers are honing in on the type of energy they want in a trip. “For the most part, city-goers tend to crave stimulation. They want to walk the streets, explore neighborhoods, and discover local food scenes. Beachgoers often want to slow down, unplug, and recharge. Both are great ways to travel, and we’re seeing strong demand for both this spring.”
Southern hubs
“Southern hubs like Atlanta (+211% YoY) and Nashville (+99% YoY), are also seeing a significant surge in interest as travelers seek culture, music, and local flavor for Spring Break. Atlanta has a booming food scene anchored by James Beard Award-recognized chefs and a growing number of international dining concepts are drawing food-focused travelers,” Cavis shares.
Meanwhile, Nashville’s restaurant scene has expanded rapidly, with new openings spanning everything from elevated Southern cuisine to global street food. Combined with a live music culture that reaches far beyond just country music, both Nashville and Atlanta offer the kind of walkable, experience-rich trip that today’s Spring Break travelers want.
Booking spring break trips in advance

Not only are international destinations trending, but spring break trips are also being booked further in advance than in past years. “Travelers are continuing to plan their Spring Break trips further in advance, reflecting a shift toward more intentional travel. This early planning is driven by a desire to ensure better value and guaranteed accommodations, especially in popular global hubs and trending cities,” says Cavis. “By booking ahead, travelers can secure the specific types of stays and experiences that best reflect how they want to recharge this spring.”
