Omni Hotels & Resorts is heading to Mexico for the first time. The hotel brand has officially opened reservations for Omni Pontoque Resort at Punta de Mita, a new luxury beachfront property scheduled to welcome guests beginning March 2, 2027.

Located along Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, Omni Pontoque will span 50 oceanfront acres between the region’s mountains and Pacific coastline. The resort will have 202 guest rooms, 28 junior suites, 14 suites equipped with private plunge pools, and two four-bedroom residential-style villas perched along the cliffs.

Guests will also have private access to a 1,250-foot white-sand beach, plus five resort pools and an oceanfront fitness center. The 11,105-square-foot Spa at Omni Pontoque will be spread across 12 standalone buildings and include 14 treatment rooms.

The opening marks Omni Hotels & Resorts’ debut in Mexico and expands the brand’s luxury portfolio into one of the country’s increasingly popular Pacific Coast destinations.

Dining and activities go beyond the beach

Food will be a major part of the experience, with five dining concepts planned across the property. Signature restaurant Tatei will specialize in fresh seafood and coastal cuisine served alongside Pacific Ocean views. Other options include regional Mexican cuisine at Zuravé, all-day dining at Esmeralda and casual fare from the resort’s pool bar and grill.

Travelers looking to explore beyond the property can arrange guided nature tours and boat charters to the uninhabited Islas Marietas. Nearby adventures will also include mountain trails, ATV routes and ziplines. Families will have access to a dedicated kids club.

Reservations are currently available for select room and suite categories for stays beginning March 2, 2027. Omni says additional details, including the resort’s official opening date, will be announced later.

Dispatches from Tohoku, Part 2: Deeper Into the North
Fir, Plant, Tree

Call me Marlow. Much like the weary, half-insane mariner-turned-narrator in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, I have returned to hearth and home with a harrowing tale of adventure in distant climes. Detractors might say that a cosseted press trip through modern Japan is not quite the same as sailing up the 19th-century Congo. But I would counter that a week spent sampling sake and whisky, dining at luxury restaurants, and soaking in onsens represents its own kind of heroic journey.

Part One took us through Fukushima and Yamagata Prefectures. This section moves farther north, through boreal forests roamed by Asian black bears, past fishing villages hugging the frigid coast, all the way to the gateway to Hokkaido. Along the way, we’ll feast in fish markets, hike through the mountains, and learn about Japan’s answer to Mardi Gras.

This Ritz-Carlton dessert made me lick my plate
Noori Sushi Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton in Aruba

Yes, you heard that right. There was one dessert at the Ritz-Carlton in Aruba so good it transcended manners. Do I recommend licking your plate in a room full of the most elevated of society? Not for any normal dish. And I was so sneaky about it that I doubt anyone but my photographer and maybe the guy monitoring the security cameras, saw it. But still, it happened, and I don’t regret it.

In early October, I was invited to Aruba to experience the Ritz-Carlton in all its glory. I have to say, it was better than the Lodge at Bodega Bay, which was named the #1 Hotel in the World by Conde Nast in 2024. The Ritz-Carlton is well known for its top-notch restaurant service, and Aruba offers so many memorable activities, but today I wanted to highlight the cuisine. This menu is probably one of the most consistently good offerings I’ve tried, and the portion sizes are generous, too.
