If you didn’t realize it, there’s a whole new world of spirits out there. Sure, you can find classic spirits like various types of whiskey (and whisky), gin, vodka, tequila, rum, and more. But have you ever heard of THC spirits?

This reasonably new category has seen a ridiculous amount of growth in the last few years, thanks to the rise of sober curious drinking and folks interested in healthier lifestyle choices without giving up their social lives.

In my years of writing about alcohol, I’ve tried almost any spirit you can name, and there’s something different about THC spirits, and this is a big reason why they’re so popular.

What is THC?

Before I get into the spirit itself, it’s important to provide some background on THC. Also known as Tetrahydrocannabinol, THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. It produces the feeling of being “high” when consuming marijuana or edibles. THC is now also a spirit category, and depending on the amount present, it can cause effects such as euphoria, relaxation, altered sensory perception, and an increased appetite, commonly known as “the munchies.”

What are THC spirits?

Let’s be clear, THC spirits don’t contain any alcohol. Instead, they’re infused with THC. They were created to be used in the same way one might use a spirit in a cocktail, but they won’t give you a hangover like your favorite whiskey, rum, tequila, or gin might if you imbibe a little too much.

THC spirits are made by extracting cannabinoids from either hemp or cannabis. It’s then broken down into THC oil, which is blended with a non-alcoholic liquid to create a THC spirit. At this point, some brands also add flavors (such as citrus) to make the spirit more palatable.

THC spirits contain no alcohol and are crafted as zero-proof beverages to enjoy as a shot, sipper, or mixed into a mocktail. The “buzz” from THC spirits is a relaxing, euphoric experience, unlike the intoxication, dizziness, or hangover typically caused by alcohol. THC content varies by product, usually between 2mg and 10mg, and is designed to act quickly, with effects starting within 15-20 minutes. They are also ideal for those seeking a more sober-curious social environment.

Boxed wine gets a bad rap because, well, it’s wine in a box. You’ve heard all the negative connotations by now: They’re cheap, unsophisticated, and downright boring. You walk into any party with boxed wine, and you’ll not only raise eyebrows, but also be persona non grata at the next shindig. I’ve personally never sipped wine from a box, though that has a lot to do with the fact that my introduction to wine happened when a date of mine from more than 20 years ago ordered a bottle of Château Ste. I’d open one every few months when guests preferred something buttery or fruity over carbonated or oaky booze.

It wasn’t until my trip across Tuscany in April 2018 that I really learned to appreciate wine. After touring the tiny village, one wine came out on top, and it’s one I order every chance I get when dining out: Chianti Classico. But always make sure the bottle carries the black rooster symbol. The older I get, the more I appreciate a glass of wine. Heck, last summer while visiting Cuban Creations Cigar Bar in New Orleans, the lovely waitress recommended a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon for the Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva cigar I was about to light. It was a great recommendation.
