Chattanooga Whiskey’s new Tennessee whiskey was finished on playable Maplewood records

This is the best whiskey for music lovers

If you like Bad Santa, Michael Jackson’s “Bad,” or literally anything with the word “bad” in the title (including Leroy Brown), you’ll love the newest innovative whiskey from Chattanooga Whiskey. It’s literally called Bad Chattanooga. But it’s so much more than a whimsical name.

Bad Chattanooga

Not only is this whiskey called Bad Chattanooga, but it’s also one of the most creative whiskeys on the market. Adding to its experimental releases, Bad Chattanooga might be the first whiskey ever finished with toasted maple wood records. Yes, you read that right. It’s finished with wood that is also a record you can play on a turntable.

Specifically, they cut 30 records from solid sugar maple, toasted them for 24 hours, and laser-engraved them with two original tribute songs about Chattanooga written by Chattanooga Whiskey Creative Director and Dollars Family frontman Rich Abercrombie. Then, they set the records inside barrels with whiskey for a month. Instead of simply listening to your favorite band while you sip your favorite whiskey, you can drink it while listening to records that enhance its flavor.

But that’s not all the music-related information about this whiskey. It’s being released as two vinyl-inspired blends, Side A and Side B. Each expression ends with its own song.

The whiskey itself is a straight Tennessee whiskey made with three high malt mash bills mostly from Tennessee-sourced grains. Like most Tennessee whiskeys, it’s mellowed over sugar maple charcoal before maturing for at least 4 years and bottling at a potent 100 proof.

The result is a complex, balanced whiskey that features flavors like dried cherries, maple candy, chocolate, toasted vanilla beans, and charred oak. Enjoy it neat or on the rocks, with the record it comes with playing in the background just as the distillers intended.

Where can I buy it?

Bad Chattanoogan is currently available in limited quantities online at Seelbachs.com. It will be available at select whisker retailers across Tennessee in the coming weeks for the suggested retail price of $64.99 for a 750mL bottle. Drinking in the Rain: A New York speakeasy perfects a not-to-miss riff on an old fashioned named for Don Lockwood
don lockwood cocktail singin in the rain ep mgm

When I was a kid, I remember my mother always watching musicals. West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, there seemed to be one on every time my mom had control of the remote. One of the ones I remember seeing and liking immediately was Singing in the Rain. Watching Gene Kelly dancing on the flooded sidewalk and swinging around a light pole while, well, singing in the rain. I hadn’t thought of that movie in a long time. Maybe decades. That was until a few weeks ago when I was on a trip to Fort Lauderdale and I heard about a cocktail called the Don Lockwood, a riff on the old fashioned named after Kelly’s character.

Now, as a huge fan of the old fashioned, I am leery of the riffs. I am the same way with pizza, burgers, and macaroni and cheese. They’re already perfect. Stop messing with them. However, when I saw the recipe, I decided to give it a shot. I went to multiple bars and restaurants and asked each one if they had heard of the cocktail and I got a lot of blank stares and shaking heads. So, when I got back to the city, I had a very clear first priority, hit Saint Tuesday in Tribeca and try their Don Lockwood.
