New Music Monday: Heartless Bastards

September 18, 2004: An early morning flight under a thin overcast layer revealed this quilt-like vista southwest of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Fall is an amazing time in farm country. For most of the year, fields tend to be the same color when viewed from above: white in winter, brown in spring, green during the summer. But the fall harvest brings out an amazing variety of color across the landscape. I suspect that the overhead cloud layer and low angle of the morning sun may have contributed a quality of light that accentuated the color differences more than usual.Heartless Bastards’ fifth album, titled Restless Ones and coming out June 16th via Partisan Records, reveals an experienced group fully in touch with one another’s abilities. The band’s sound remains within their roots rock wheelhouse but betrays no lack of creativity.

“Hi-Line,” Restless Ones‘ fourth track, is straightforward alt-country given an extra jolt thanks to vocalist Erika Wennerstrom’s voice and lyrics. The track, along with the rest of the album, sees her exploring as-yet-unvisited avenues of sound and sensation, her bravery and ambition readily apparent in the emotional timbre and the sheer physicality of her songs.

The Heartless Bastards - "Highline"

“Hi-Line” is surrounded by two of the catchiest tracks on the album, “Black Cloud” and “Journey.” Both songs, like much of the album, deal with personal realizations Wennerstrom had in the time between the release of Heartless Bastard’s previous album, Arrow, and the recording of Restless Ones. “Black Cloud” features the lines, “I had spun out and filled myself with doubt. I was standing in the doorway with the key to my own suffering, and I said to myself, ‘There’s no use trying to be what you want me to be,” while “Journey’s” reminds the listener that the “journey is the destination.”

Black Cloud

These are familiar sentiments, and as the saying goes, “familiarity breeds contempt.” It is simple to be contemptuous of those feelings, but Wennerstrom’s voice does not allow for it. These mantras are true for Wennerstrom, and the power in her singing communicates not just the idea but the experience, too.

The band released the music video for the album’s first single, “Gates of Dawn,” on May 14 and Restless Ones comes out June 16 on Partisan Records. The video is viewable below, and the album is available for preorder on Amazon, iTunes, and Partisan.

The 10 best vanilla cigars I’ve tried and tested in 2024
Vanilla sticks and cigars on stylish background.

Cigars fall into two major categories: naturally flavored and infused. Like many that come from Acid, infused cigars are soaked in essential oils, sugars, botanicals, or beverages like cognac to make them fruitier, sweeter, and wholly unique. Natural cigars, on the other hand, get their flavors from the blend of tobacco leaves they're made from. Some cigar enthusiasts like both kinds, while some like one or the other. It's mainly up to your preferences and tastes. But if you're looking for a much broader range of flavors, infused cigars are the way to go. Some other popular brands that make infused cigars are Dutch Master, Rocky Patel, Drew Estate, and Baccarat. Here are a few of the best vanilla cigars I've tried and tested in 2024.

Anybody who watched AMC's zombie epic The Walking Dead in the early 2010s surely was attracted to the charm and authenticity in the face of Steven Yeun. Playing the brave yet kind-souled Glenn Rhee, Yeun handled fighting scenes and emotional turmoil better than almost anyone in the cast. TV nerds knew he possessed a bright future, and his talent has littered a variety of different spaces since he left the world of the reanimated.

The 10 best mild cigars I’ve tried and tested in 2024
AVO Synchro cigar resting on top of filled whiskey glass.

While I do prefer stronger medium-bodied to full-bodied cigars, I'll be the first to admit that mild cigars can be just as good and just as flavorful. If you're a beginner to smoking cigars, or you just want something more mellow, with less heat and pepper, the mild category is the place to be. But if you just grab something randomly off the shelf in your local cigar lounge, chances are, you won't find some of the best sticks on your first try. I love sharing the art of cigars with others, including making sure they have a great experience. To do that, I've tested a bunch of mild cigars to find the most flavorful, and I'm sharing my experiences with you. Here are my favorite smokes from the bunch.
The best mild cigars I've tried and tested

Right off the bat, you may notice that some refer to mild cigars as "mellow" and may also use the phrases "mild to medium" or "mellow to medium." Believe it or not, these are varying classifications. While mellow and mild are often interchangeable, I have heard some cigar enthusiasts refer to "mellow" as more of a smooth, less-peppery smoke, sometimes even with lots of cream notes. In that case, mild would be slightly stronger, but not by much. The terms "mild to medium" and "mellow to medium" are used to place the cigar between those two categories. To describe it better, they're slightly stronger than mild or mellow but not quite as strong as a medium cigar. This could mean they have more intense flavors, more pepper, or a combination of stronger changes in the later thirds. If you're looking for a strictly mellow cigar, stick with the respective classification. For the list, I chose a range of options, but all of them are definitely mild, relaxing smokes.
