The U.S. State Department has issued a new travel advisory for the Maldives, urging American travelers to “exercise increased caution” amid concerns over potential terrorist activity. The revised Level 2 advisory, released on October 7, 2025, highlights the risk of attacks in areas frequented by tourists.

According to the department, “terrorist groups may attack with little or no warning,” targeting places such as resorts, markets, transportation hubs, and government facilities. While the Maldives remains one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations, U.S. officials are advising travelers to stay alert and aware of their surroundings during upcoming trips.

Is the Maldives safe?

Despite the updated travel advisory, the Maldives remains generally safe for tourists. A Level 2 advisory is fairly common for international destinations and simply means travelers should stay alert and exercise increased caution on their vacation. Most visits to the Maldives are trouble-free, with millions of tourists visiting its islands each year for luxury resorts, diving, and relaxation across the area.

The U.S. State Department advises visitors to monitor local media for breaking news and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time updates and safety alerts from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Enrolling in STEP also makes it easier for officials to reach you or your emergency contact in the event of an emergency.

As with any international trip, officials also recommend purchasing travel insurance before you go to protect against unexpected disruptions or emergencies during your stay.

Expedia just released its latest set of data: The 2026 Island Hot List, a trending list that compiles the emerging islands travelers are searching for before they become the next big thing. According to the newExpedia data, interest in these rising island destinations is up 55% on average year-over-year, while social media mentions have climbed 20% as travelers look for new experiences, better value, and fewer crowds. If you ask me, this is pretty surprising to hear it’s up 55%, especially when I thought islands were already one of the most popular year-round travel destinations.

Ranked #1 on Expedia’s 2026 Island Hot List is St. Lucia, an island I first fell in love with back in 2023 when I went on my honeymoon there. Once you visit here, it’s pretty easy to see why it’s ranked the best for romantic escapes. This destination has been a popular spot for anniversary and honeymoon trips for a long time now — and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. As travelers move beyond crowded Caribbean hotspots, many are willing to take the extra trek to destinations like St. Lucia for it’s dramatic scenery, romantic resort options like Sugar Beach, and soft adventure focus.

Rome is one of the most visited cities in Europe, and by all accounts, it gets crowded.
