There’s just something magical about autumn. The golden glow of the trees, the crisp bite in the air, and that unmistakable sense that something spooky might be lurking around the corner. As someone who absolutely loves Halloween, I can’t help but feel it deserves a little more celebration. Too often, it gets lost in the shuffle between Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas lights. But if you ask me, Halloween should get its flowers, and maybe even its own dedicated trip (or three).

That’s where this Halloween travel guide comes in. From haunted hotels and eerie attractions to family-friendly fun, these destinations across North America promise just the right mix of goosebumps and good times.

Estes Park, Colorado – The Stanley Hotel

Tucked into the Rockies, this grand hotel famously inspired Stephen King’s The Shining. Guests can join nightly ghost tours or simply soak in the elegant mountain views that make Estes Park such a dreamy autumn escape.

New Orleans, Louisiana – French Quarter & Hotel Monteleone

Few cities do spooky quite like New Orleans. The Hotel Monteleone blends Southern luxury with haunted history, complete with a revolving carousel bar and stories of resident spirits.

Halloween in SLO County comes with a side of sunshine and sophistication. Families can enjoy Zoo Boo at the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero, or brave haunted house experiences in Paso Robles. Stay at a wine country resort, where trick-or-treat trails, pumpkin-decorating workshops, and themed dinners bring everyone together.

Toronto transforms into a Halloween playground for grown-ups. The city’s iconic Casa Loma hosts Legends of Horror, a theatrical haunted walk through tunnels, gardens, and candlelit halls. Meanwhile, Canada’s Wonderland takes things up a notch with its Halloween Haunt, complete with mazes, scare zones, and live shows. Stay in luxury at a high-end hotel like the Four Seasons Toronto, where you can unwind in style after all the scares.

San Antonio, Texas – The Menger Hotel

Known as one of the most haunted hotels in America, it’s said to be home to more than 30 resident spirits, including a former chambermaid who still roams the halls. But don’t let that scare you off, the Menger still offers historic grandeur and refined Southern hospitality.

  • Best time to visit: Late September through early November, when temperatures are comfortable and ghost tour season is in full swing.

Arizona – Jerome & Bisbee

Once-thriving mining towns turned haunted hideaways, Jerome and Bisbee are two of Arizona’s most spooky fall destinations. Stroll through Jerome’s historic streets on an evening ghost tour, or browse Bisbee’s quirky art galleries by day before joining locals for ghost stories over cocktails at century-old saloons.

  • Best time to visit: October to November, when cooler temps and smaller crowds make the desert air feel eerie.

Vermont – Stowe Ghost Walk & covered bridges

In autumn, Stowe transforms into a scene straight out of a fairytale. All misty mountains, covered bridges, and maple-scented air. Join a ghost walk through the village to hear local legends, then explore nearby folklore-filled hiking trails.

These 2026 island getaways are surging in popularity right now

Expedia just released its latest set of data: The 2026 Island Hot List, a trending list that compiles the emerging islands travelers are searching for before they become the next big thing. According to the newExpedia data, interest in these rising island destinations is up 55% on average year-over-year, while social media mentions have climbed 20% as travelers look for new experiences, better value, and fewer crowds. If you ask me, this is pretty surprising to hear it’s up 55%, especially when I thought islands were already one of the most popular year-round travel destinations.

Ranked #1 on Expedia’s 2026 Island Hot List is St. Lucia, an island I first fell in love with back in 2023 when I went on my honeymoon there. Once you visit here, it’s pretty easy to see why it’s ranked the best for romantic escapes. This destination has been a popular spot for anniversary and honeymoon trips for a long time now — and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. As travelers move beyond crowded Caribbean hotspots, many are willing to take the extra trek to destinations like St. Lucia for it’s dramatic scenery, romantic resort options like Sugar Beach, and soft adventure focus.

Rome is one of the most visited cities in Europe, and by all accounts, it gets crowded. But considering that it’s one of the world’s most important epicenters for history, culture, food and architecture, we can forgive the crowds. The historic building sets the tone before you even check in, with restored 600-year-old columns in the main entrance, pale travertine floors, a light-dappled lobby overflowing with greenery, and a massive marble staircase that’s almost comically regal. And its neighbor is the gorgeous San Marcello al Corso Church—so you can start your sightseeing by literally going next door.
