When people plan a trip to Copenhagen, they usually fill their itinerary with colorful harbor views, Michelin-starred restaurants, and endless bike rides through the city. What they often don’t plan for is slowing down.
That’s where Rox Resort comes in.
Located in Køge, about 30 minutes south of Copenhagen by train, Rox feels worlds away from the capital without requiring much effort to reach. My partner and I brought our bikes aboard the train, pedaled about 10 minutes from the station, and suddenly found ourselves swapping city streets for ocean views, rooftop pools, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that makes you immediately wish you’d booked another night.
For anyone looking to pair a few days in Copenhagen with a luxury coastal retreat, Rox might just be one of Denmark’s best-kept secrets.
First impressions set the tone

Before we’d even reached our room, Rox had already made a strong first impression.
The lobby immediately felt more like a stylish living room than a hotel reception. Plush couches and lounge chairs were scattered beneath warm, romantic lighting, while ping pong, shuffleboard, and other games invited guests to actually spend time in the space instead of simply passing through it. Even check-in felt refreshingly different. It doubles as the hotel bar, where we were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine before we’d even received our room keys.
It’s playful without feeling gimmicky and luxurious without taking itself too seriously, a balance that’s surprisingly difficult to get right.
Scandinavian minimalism done well

We stayed in an Elegant Park View Room, one of the resort’s 156 rooms, each of which includes its own private balcony.
Like much of the property, the room embraces understated Nordic design. Soft lighting, warm wood tones, clean lines, and cozy textures made it feel calming almost immediately. Ours overlooked the courtyard, but we could also see the sea from the balcony – a reminder of just how close the coastline really is.
The room came stocked with everything you’d expect from a luxury stay, including robes, slippers, quality toiletries, and thoughtful touches that made it easy to settle in.
It’s worth mentioning that not every room has the same view. Some face the parking area, something Rox clearly notes during booking, so it’s worth paying attention if a sea view is important to you.
The Pool Club is worth the upgrade

The biggest draw at Rox is undoubtedly its collection of heated pools overlooking the Baltic Sea.
One rooftop pool is included with your stay, while access to the additional rooftop Pool Club, which includes both an indoor and outdoor heated pool plus the sauna, requires an additional fee.
If you’re debating whether it’s worth it, my answer is an easy yes.
Shortly after arriving, we headed upstairs only to discover that most of the complimentary rooftop loungers had already been claimed. It was the only moment during our stay that felt slightly disappointing.
Fortunately, the Pool Club turned out to be a completely different experience.
It was noticeably quieter, making it easy to find comfortable loungers beside the heated outdoor pool before moving inside to the equally beautiful indoor pool. The sauna quickly became one of my favorite parts of the stay, especially with sweeping views toward the water just outside.
Guests can also book massages and spa treatments, though with only one night at the resort, we simply ran out of time.
If anything, that became the recurring theme of our visit.
Great cocktails, even better evenings

While Smith Brasserie serves as Rox’s signature restaurant, the cocktails may have stolen the show.
Dinner began with oysters, Champagne, and white asparagus before moving on to mains. I ordered the risoni while my partner chose the beef tartare with frites, and both dishes delivered plenty of flavor without feeling overly fussy. Dessert arrived tableside in the form of tiramisu served directly from the pan, making for a memorable ending to the meal.
Normally, I’m perfectly content ordering a dirty martini almost anywhere I go.
Not here.
The cocktail menu was creative enough that I found myself branching out instead. Every drink arriving around the dining room looked more interesting than the last, and the ones I tried easily lived up to their presentation.
Later that evening, we wandered into Birdcage Bar, Rox’s late-night cocktail lounge inspired by classic hotel bars. The space, enclosed by dramatic glass windows that resemble the shape of a birdcage, feels intimate without being stuffy. I ordered a passionfruit and vanilla cocktail while my partner opted for the house take on an Old Fashioned, giving us another reason to linger longer than we’d planned.
Earlier in the afternoon, Pool Club access also gave us entry to The Dumpling Bar, where we shared a fresh tuna and cucumber salad alongside a couple of beers between swimming sessions. It was exactly the kind of light meal you want after spending hours in the sun.
The next morning, breakfast was technically a buffet, but calling it that almost undersells the experience.
Fresh fruit, artisan breads, gourmet cheeses, smoothies, pastries, hot dishes, and just about anything else you could imagine filled the dining room. We carried our plates outside and enjoyed breakfast overlooking the resort grounds while guests played lawn games nearby.
Easy to reach, hard to leave

One of Rox’s greatest strengths is how accessible it feels.
Because it’s only about 30 minutes from Copenhagen, it works equally well as a dedicated vacation or a relaxing extension to a city trip. You can spend the morning exploring Nyhavn before arriving in time for rooftop cocktails by afternoon.
If you do venture beyond the resort, it’s an easy walk to the beach or into the charming town of Køge.
That said, I honestly didn’t feel much desire to leave.
Between the pools, spa facilities, restaurants, bars, outdoor games, and ocean views, you could comfortably spend several days here without running out of things to enjoy.
In fact, my biggest complaint wasn’t really about the resort at all. It was that we only stayed one night.
With check-in at 3 p.m. and check-out at 11 a.m., our visit felt over almost as soon as it began. If I were booking again, I’d absolutely plan for at least two or three nights to fully enjoy everything Rox has to offer.
It’s also worth noting that Rox isn’t positioned as a budget escape. This is a luxury resort, and the pricing reflects that. But if you’re looking to treat yourself while visiting Denmark, I found the experience matched the expectation.
Combined with genuinely warm, knowledgeable staff who seemed to sincerely care about making every guest’s stay memorable, Rox delivered exactly what a modern luxury resort should.
For travelers who love Copenhagen but also appreciate slowing down, Rox offers the best of both worlds – city access when you want it and coastal calm when you don’t.
