The experimental Montreal quartet Avec le soleil sortant de sa bouche (“With the sun coming out of his mouth”) released its sophomore album, Pas pire pop, I Love You so Much, on January 20th through Constellation Records. Composed of three movements across ten tracks, Pas pire pop explores a variety of sounds, citing: psychedelic rock, krautrock, desert rock, punk rock, noise rock, afrobeat, experimental pop, post-rock, and electronic music as touchstones for the band’s own work.
Avec le soleil moves through a variety of sounds, grounded by longform grooves. Sinuous bass, chiming guitars and wordless vocals are interwoven with fizzing and squelching electronics to propel the band’s signature, methodically exuberant grooves. Sonic collage and cut-ups wonderfully destabilize the new album, creating little disturbances and wake-up bells along the overriding trance rock journey. This is post-modern psychedelic electronic funk-rock.
