If you’re sitting in chilly Canada like me right now, daydreaming about white sand, turquoise water, and that glorious feeling of not needing a parka to take out the trash, this one’s for you. While I’m over here sipping my third cup of hot coffee and pretending it’s a piña colada, I decided to channel my wanderlust into something productive: asking travel experts (and my own sun-soaked memories) for their favorite tropical travel destinations.
From iconic beach vacation spots that live up to the hype to lesser-known destinations where hammocks outnumber humans, this list is your ultimate ticket to warmth and SPF-mandatory relaxation. Grab your imaginary flip-flops, because these tropical travel destinations deserve a permanent spot on your bucket list.
Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

If you’re craving a beach vacation that offers both postcard-worthy scenery and a bit of adventure, Phu Quoc Island should be at the top of your list. “It feels like you’re traveling between continents,” says Jennifer Pham, family travel blogger behind Diapers To Destinations. “In some parts, like Grandworld and Sunset Town, you’ll find European-style streets, canals, and plazas. A short drive away, you’re back in the lush tropical jungle or a traditional Vietnamese night market.”
With gorgeous beaches like Ong Lang and Sao Beach, global cuisine, and massive attractions like VinWonders and the Hon Thom Cable Car, it’s easy to see why this island shines year-round. (Pro tip: the best time to visit Vietnam is typically from November to April for sunshine-filled days.)
The Maldives

If your version of paradise involves turquoise lagoons, private villas on stilts, and room service delivered by boat, it’s time to go to the Maldives. This chain of islands in the Indian Ocean is one of those tropical travel destinations that feels almost unreal, until you’re snorkeling alongside manta rays, dining underwater, or catching a sunset cruise with dolphins.
Spend your days paddleboarding in crystal-clear water, indulging in a spa treatment over the sea, or simply doing nothing at all (which is kind of the national pastime here).
Grand Cayman

Looking for a warm-weather Caribbean escape? Grand Cayman delivers in every category. “Many of our clients ask, ‘What is the best Caribbean island?’ and my answer is always Grand Cayman,” says Rob DelliBovi, founder and CEO at RDB Hospitality Group. “It’s the only island in the Caribbean that makes more money from banking than tourism. The island has created infrastructure to protect its private banking clients, meaning it’s very clean and safe. This is an island where anyone would feel comfortable walking around at night. The island has by far the best food in the Caribbean, and great hotel options.”
Add world-class diving, the famous Seven Mile Beach, and incredible dining, and you’ve got paradise with a side of sophistication.
Whitsunday Islands, Australia

The Whitsundays are the crown jewels of Australia’s coast, comprising 74 separate islands. You can stay on Hamilton Island (the fanciest and priciest of the bunch) at places like the Reef View Hotel or qualia, or opt for luxury on Hayman Island or laid-back charm on Daydream Island.
Prefer to keep the budget in check? The mainland town of Airlie Beach is a lively backpacker hub with plenty of nightlife. From any of these spots, you can take unforgettable day trips to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a long day, but totally worth it.
Hawaii

Few tropical travel destinations offer as much variety as Hawaii. “Hawaii is full of activities for everyone,” says Megan Golden, travel blogger from The Golden Impression. “Each island seems like it has its own personality, from tons of activities in Oahu, to the amount of serenity in Maui, to the breathtaking views of volcanoes and waterfalls on the Big Island.”
One of the best parts? You can easily hop between islands. Flights are short, affordable, and frequent. Spend a few days exploring the energy of Oahu, then jet off to Maui for a dose of calm or the Big Island for lava flows and stargazing. It’s like getting three vacations in one.
St. Barts

For a dose of French Riviera glamour in the Caribbean, St. Barts is tough to beat. “It’s a little ‘see and be seen,’ but still relaxed,” says Kendra Wagner, CEO & Founder of boutique travel agency Kendra Wagner Travel. “You can spend mornings at a quiet café in Gustavia, then pop into a beach club like Shellona or Nikki Beach when you want that lively buzz. It’s where luxury meets laid-back.”
The hotels here are equally dreamy. Think Eden Rock – St Barths, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa, and Hotel Christopher, where every view looks like it belongs on a postcard.
Sardinia, Italy

The second-largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily), Sardinia is a wild, sun-drenched dream that’s all about stunning scenery. Sure, there are plenty of beaches, but the island’s real charm lies in its contrasts.
Explore rocky islands like Tavolara and the Maddalena Archipelago, hike the mountains of Gennargentu, or take a scenic drive along the dramatic Orosei Gulf. Between swims, you can wander through prehistoric ruins known as nuraghi or sip wine in one of Sardinia’s charming small towns.
Tulum, Mexico

Tulum has long been one of the most beloved tropical travel destinations, and for good reason. “What really gets me is how peaceful it is,” says Jason Wright, Founder at Paradise Weddings. “You’ve got these ancient Mayan ruins right on the coast, these incredible eco-boutique hotels tucked into the jungle, and this overall vibe that just lets you exhale. It’s one of those rare places where you can actually feel yourself unwinding.”
Among the top things to do in Tulum: explore the Tulum Ruins, swim in the crystal-clear Gran Cenote, bike through the jungle, and end the day with a cocktail on Playa Paraiso.
