American Airlines passengers can look forward to a smoother boarding process, thanks to new rules announced by the airline. As of October 6, the carrier began removing bag sizers from its gates across the U.S. Though American still has size restrictions for carry-on bags, the removal of bag sizers seeks to quicken the boarding process. Still, the airline will offer bag sizers in lobby areas to help passengers determine if their bags will fit in overhead bins.
American continues to find ways to streamline boarding

Removing bag sizers from gates builds on American Airlines’ recent policies designed to make boarding easier. Among those are five additional minutes of boarding time for mainline flights, updated groups, and technology to ensure groups board at the assigned time. Together, these make entering the aircraft less of a hassle, so travelers can hop on, take off, and enjoy the flight.
According to the airline, “Team members will continue to monitor carry-on baggage in the lobby and at the gate, and oversized items will still be required to be checked in ahead of the flight.”
On its website, American Airlines states: “You can bring only one carry-on item along with your personal item. Your carry-on must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. If it doesn’t fit, it will need to be checked. Be sure all your carry-on items are labeled in case they are checked.”
“The total size of your carry-on, including the handles and wheels, cannot exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) and must fit in the sizer at the airport.”
