Fall has always been my favorite season. Not too hot, not too cold, and absolutely gorgeous outside. Growing up in rural Ohio, I lived for those crisp drives with the windows down, watching the trees explode with colorful fall foliage.
Of course, everyone knows the classic autumn hotspots, but there’s a whole world of under-the-radar destinations that deserve a spot on your bucket list. I chatted with seasoned travelers and sprinkled in a few of my own picks to create a guide to the best places to visit in the fall.
Niagara-on-the-Lake

Just 15 miles from the roar of Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers a quieter, more charming autumn escape. Perched on the shores of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River, this cozy town is famous for its wineries, which are surrounded by beautiful leaves in autumn.
Sip award-winning vintages at spots like Peller Estates Winery and Restaurant or Konzelmann Estate Winery, where tasting rooms overlook rows of golden vines. After a leisurely afternoon of wine sampling, wander through the historic town center to browse boutiques, cozy coffee shops, and inviting restaurants that make this one of the best places to visit in the fall.
Nikko, Japan

A two-hour train ride from Tokyo, Nikko is a serene mountain town that feels worlds away from the city buzz. It’s the gateway to Nikko National Park, home to lakes, hot springs, and wild monkeys, but its crown jewel is the lavish Toshogu Shrine – the ornate mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
“The vibrant hues of the fall foliage against the calm of the world heritage temples make for a fantastic experience,” says Joe Cronin, President of International Citizens Insurance. “The Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, framed by fire-red and gold leaves of autumn, provide views rivaling any work of art.”
Vermont

There’s nothing quite like Vermont in the fall, and it’s easy to see why New England is famous for autumn getaways. “The bright red and gold shades are unreal, and they are everywhere you look,” says Nadav Levy, Founder of TravelingWiz.com. “Small towns feel extra cozy that time of year, with farm stands and maple syrup around every corner. It’s simple, but that’s what makes it special.”
If you’re short on time, base yourself in Stowe or nearby Waterbury for easy access to the region’s best scenery. Hike or drive up Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest peak, or cruise along Route 108 through Smuggler’s Notch for mountain views framed by the area’ famous fiery foliage.
Julian, California

Just over an hour northeast of San Diego, Julian feels like a slice of New England dropped into Southern California, especially when the leaves start to turn. This charming mountain town is famous for its cozy inns and expansive apple orchards. “The ideal apple-picking time is from August to mid-October, when temperatures range from a high of 86° in August to 72° in October,” says Michelle Jensen, founder of Travel HerStory. “The later you go, the fewer apples there will be; however, that’s when those lovely trees will be changing colors as well.”
Spend the day picking apples, sipping hard cider, or savoring a slice of Julian’s legendary pie. You can also browse antique shops, take a hayride, hike scenic trails, or even tour a historic gold mine.
Sunriver, Oregon

Set along the Deschutes River and wrapped by the Deschutes National Forest, Sunriver is one of the best places to visit in the fall for travelers who love outdoor adventure.
“In autumn, the pine forests, meadows, and mountain views take on especially striking colors, creating a nostalgic Americana feel,” says Melissa Krueger, CEO of Classic Vacations. You’ll want to toast s’mores by an outdoor fire or stop for homemade ice cream in the town center.”
Sardinia, Italy

Dreaming of a European getaway? Fall, especially October, is a fantastic time to visit Sardinia, when the summer crowds have vanished but the island’s beaches and villages are still full of life. Warm days make it perfect for exploring the coast, while cooler evenings set the stage for the island’s festival season.
“Autunno in Barbagia is by and large the most prominent fall festival, taking place throughout the season in around 30 villages and small towns of the mountainous region of Barbagia,” says Claudia Tavani, Owner at Strictly Sardinia. “During the festival, you can learn more about the traditions and culture of Sardinia and taste its many delicious flavors.”
Lisbon, Portugal

I visited Lisbon last fall, and it was an absolute dream. Temperatures lingered in the comfortable mid-70s, the summer crowds had thinned, and the city felt local and laid-back. With fewer tourists, it’s easier to enjoy the city’s charm at your own pace, and trust me, you’ll appreciate the cooler air when tackling those famously steep hills.
There’s no shortage of things to do in Lisbon: explore the tiled streets of Alfama, climb to the hilltop São Jorge Castle for city views, sample pastéis de nata at a traditional bakery, or catch the sunset from a riverside miradouro.
New York City

While New York City is world-famous for its winter and Christmas magic, fall might just be the city’s best-kept secret. “I think fall in New York is even more magical than winter in New York,” says Steve Schwab, CEO of Casago. “When the leaves in Central Park turn colors there is nothing else like it. The market at Bryant Park opens up again in October and the city just generally seems made for the fall season.”
Some of the best things to do in NYC this time of year include strolling through Central Park, walking along the High Line, catching a Broadway show, and enjoying rooftop bars with autumn views of the skyline.
Michigan

When it comes to the best places to visit in the fall, Michigan is a true standout. “I’ve always believed that Michigan’s fall foliage is something special, and I’m confident that it’s one of the best fall destinations,” says Kelly Wolgomont, Vice President of Pure Michigan.
Stunning views can be found across the state, but Kelly recommends the Lower Peninsula’s M-119 scenic route, better known as the “Tunnel of Trees,” is a must. “The road winds through a canopy of stunning leaves along the coast of Lake Michigan, taking you through charming small towns like Good Hart and Middle Village,” she says.
