There are few things I love more than lounging on a beach with a book in hand, soaking up the sun and the sound of the waves. I travel to Europe often, and whenever the weather cooperates, I make it a point to visit at least one beach, whether it’s a busy seaside hotspot or a quiet cove off the beaten path.

To find out which coastal destinations truly stand out, I asked a few travel experts to share their picks for the best beaches in Europe. Their recommendations include a mix of iconic shores and hidden gems, from dramatic cliff-lined bays to striking black sand beaches. I’ve also included a few personal favorites that I think belong on any beach lover’s bucket list.

If you’re dreaming of your next European getaway, this list might just help you decide where to dip your toes next.

San Nicola Arcella, Italy

Tucked along Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast, San Nicola Arcella is one of the best places to visit in Italy for beach lovers seeking natural beauty without the crowds. The main beach here boasts soft sand, clear blue water, and dramatic cliffs framing the shore.

“With the sparkling sea on one side and the dramatic Pollino Mountains on the other, the natural beauty is absolutely breathtaking,” says Janet Cohen, Travel Writer & Founder of Practical Travel Concepts. “What makes it truly special are the seaside lidos – offering sunbeds, shade, delicious food, drinks, and even recreational games – all without the heavy crowds of more touristy destinations.”

Stiniva Beach, Croatia

Situated in a secluded cove on the island of Vis, Stiniva Beach is one of Croatia’s most striking coastal spots. Enclosed by towering cliffs, the narrow entrance opens up to a peaceful pebble beach and impossibly blue water.

The water is remarkably calm and blue, making it perfect for sunbathing on a hot summer’s day,” says Kanika Puri, Chief Customer Officer at Fast Cover Travel Insurance. “While most people access the beach by private boat ride, it’s possible to hike down from the road at the top of the cliffs. It’s a little strenuous, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible views and even a charming little shop on the shore selling ice cream.”

Reynisfjara, Iceland

Reynisfjara is hands down one of my favorite beaches in Europe, even though it’s nothing like your typical tropical getaway. This black sand beach on Iceland’s south coast is all about wild, dramatic beauty. You can’t swim here (those sneaker waves are no joke), but it’s the perfect spot to just take in the scenery. The contrast between the black sand and the ocean is unreal. Additionally, parts of Game of Thrones Season 7 were filmed here, and it’s super easy to reach from the Ring Road.

Plage Paloma, France

Tucked away in the charming village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Paloma Beach is one of the best beaches in Europe for those looking to soak up the natural beauty of the south of France. With calm, clear water and a peaceful vibe, it’s a favorite among locals and travelers alike.

“My personal favorite beach is Paloma Beach in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, along the French Riviera,” says Kimberly Herrell, Owner and CEO of Schubach Aviation. “Aside from being strikingly beautiful and away from the crowds, Paloma Beach takes you back in time to the 1950s. I’ve been coming here for 16 years and it never changes. Be sure to book your sunbeds in advance!”

Limni Beach, Greece

If you’re looking for a quiet, scenic spot to relax while you visit Greece, Limni Beach on the island of Corfu is a hidden gem worth seeking out. This unique beach features a narrow strip of pebbles that creates two beautiful beach fronts, each with calm, turquoise water.

“Although Corfu is one of the most common islands to visit, staying on the far side of the island at Palaiokastritsa means it’s a little quieter than the main part of the island,” says Kanika Puri. “From here, you can catch a boat to Limni Beach, where a thin strip of pebble beach divides the land into two beachfronts with turquoise water on either side.”

Praia da Marinha, Portugal

Praia da Marinha is one of the most iconic beaches in Portugal, and for good reason. Tucked along the Algarve coast, it’s famous for golden cliffs and dramatic rock formations that make every angle Instagram-worthy.

“Praia da Marinha in Portugal offers visitors its cliffs of limestone and famous rock formations of Portugal symbolizing its coastline,” says Vukan Simic, travel expert and founder of BoatBooker. “Swimming escapades are ideal for the tunnel-like arches and the sea pillars, while unveiling an underwater world ideal for snorkeling.”

Plaka Beach, Greece

Plaka Beach is a serene spot on the island of Crete that offers a peaceful escape from the usual crowds.

“What makes this coastline so special is its authenticity – Plaka Beach and nearby Kolokytha are never overrun, even in high summer,” says Agapi Sbokou, a born-and-bred Cretan and co-founder of Phāea. “Guests often tell us they feel like they’ve stumbled upon a secret. I always suggest a morning trip by traditional wooden caïque to Kolokytha, when the water is impossibly still and the only sounds are cicadas and the sea.”

South Bay Beach, United Kingdom

For a classic British seaside vibe, South Bay Beach in Scarborough is hard to beat. This wide, sandy beach is perfect for families and anyone who loves seaside shops and restaurants and a nostalgic atmosphere.

“A classic British seaside experience,” says Carolina Martínez, Communications Manager at GuruWalk. “South Bay Beach offers a wide stretch of clean sand, colorful beach huts and a nostalgic atmosphere. Its proximity to Scarborough’s castle ruins and Victorian charm makes it a perfect mix of nature and history.”

Punta Umbria, Spain

Punta Umbria is a fantastic beach destination on Spain’s southern coast, known for its long stretches of golden sand and inviting waters. It’s especially popular with watersports enthusiasts thanks to its consistent winds and wide open space.

“This beach has a significant low tide and is also popular for windsurfing and kiteboarding,” says travel expert Mercedes Zach from ASAP Tickets. “And besides, Punta Umbria is one of the cleanest beaches in Spain and has been awarded a Blue Flag for its high standards of cleanliness and excellent facilities.”

Golem Beach, Albania

Golem Beach is quickly becoming one of the best beaches in Europe for travelers seeking a peaceful and authentic experience. Located in Albania, it feels worlds away from the crowded shores you’ll find in major tourist hotspots.

“Golem Beach in central Albania offers soft sand, warm waters, and a much more relaxed vibe compared to Western Europe’s coastlines,” says Alicia Walter, travel creator from The Passport Couple. “It’s affordable, walkable, and popular with locals. It’s perfect for travelers looking for an authentic, uncrowded beach day.”

Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport: A Design-Forward Retreat in the Heart of Boston’s Waterfront
The jewel of the northeast is the perfect getaway
Architecture, Building, Office Building

It began at daybreak, as a white light poked through the split in the curtains, and I awoke from a night of slumber, and the sun opened up over Boston. I climbed out of bed, opened the curtains, with the Boston skyline across the horizon, and the harbor poking through the facades of glass and steel. Welcome to the Boston Seaport.

I was on a late spring excursion, with the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport as my headquarters, to explore the city’s newest district, where arts, culture, and activity intertwined. What would I find?

Bar, Chair, Furniture

If your week was anything like mine, you'll need a strong cocktail or three this weekend. Mercifully, the martinis will flow like water this Saturday in New York City for the grand finale of World Gin Week. For the past seven days, elite cocktail bars from Cape Town and Kyoto to Singapore and Mexico City have hosted panels, bartender residencies, and tastings in celebration of all things juniper. Think of it as the World Cup for cocktail connoisseurs.

Here in Gotham, World Gin Week culminates on June 20 at The Ivory Peacock, a craft cocktail mainstay in NoMad, and its subterranean sister bar, Ploume. The two venues will host pop-ups helmed by bartenders from cathedrals of mixology like Sip & Guzzle, Dante Aperitivo, and Room 207. Expect all manner of martini mania, along with gourmet hors d'oeuvres to ensure you're still standing at the evening's end.
