Nestbox Turns Your SUV Into an Off-Grid Camper in Minutes

For sheer convenience and creature comforts, car camping always beats out tent camping. However, sleeping in your car is still never as cushy as overnighting in a decked-out RV or travel trailer. Czech-based Egoé is looking to split the difference with Nestbox, a clever camping kit “insert” that transforms a wide variety of automobiles into full-featured travel trailers in minutes.

How to install Nestbox into your VW Multivan

Nestbox is a self-contained, all-in-one assembly that mounts inside the rear luggage compartment of many vans and SUVs. The unit is lightweight, stylish, and boasts all the essential features of a dedicated teardrop trailer or RV at a fraction of the cost. The main body houses an ultra-compact camp kitchen setup with a fridge, a cook space with two burners, a water reservoir with a tap or submersible pump, and ample storage drawers and bags for dishes, cookware, and utensils. The rear also unfolds with a sleeping grate on which to place the included hydrophobic foam mattress. The only thing missing is a bathroom, but that’s why the good lord gave us shrubs and spackle buckets.

Egoe Nest

Because Egoé is a European company, Nestbox is designed primarily for overseas vans and SUVs that most Statesiders have never heard of (like the Peugeot Traveller and Volkswagen T6). However, given the substantially larger dimensions of most American models, the device fits many U.S.-specific automobiles as well. Egoé encourages buyers who are unsure to contact them directly with any inquiries about their particular vehicle.

Egoé has designed and manufactured car camping and outdoor furniture since 2006. Their catalog includes a number of clever products designed to solve common problems many car campers face. Nestbag, for example, is an expandable, soft-sided storage device that transforms the rear window of almost any car into an on-the-go closet. Their other car-camp-friendly furniture includes Nestbed (a collapsible bed frame and mattress with a hydrophobic coating for easy cleaning) and Nestblock (a folding outdoor table and chair set compact enough to fit almost anywhere).

The entry-level Nestbox Tripper has a base price of around USD $3,400 (excluding shipping), while the larger, upgraded Nestbox Roamer and off-road-ready Nestbox Supertramp both start around USD $3,900.

Lotus Caravans’ 2022 Off Grid Travel Trailer Is Designed to Go Almost Anywhere
lotus caravans off grid 2020 overlanding vehicle offgrid exterior profile

In the last few years, overlanding has exploded in popularity in the U.S. There are plenty of competent off-road-ready travel trailers to complement a properly outfitted truck or SUV. But, most tend to be of the smaller, pop-up variety. In stark contrast, the new 2020 Off Grid from Australia's Lotus Caravans is a full-sized, full-featured luxury camper designed to trek to almost any corner of the globe.

Inside and out, every component and feature of the 2020 Off Grid is ideal for venturing and staying far, far off-grid. The RV’s hybrid shell combines industry-best timber wall construction, marine-grade composite paneling, and aluminum panels around the bottom of the rig. All are designed to withstand the harshest elements. The entire affair rolls on oversized BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires and custom 17-inch Lotus Caravan wheels to ensure it can travel wherever the road takes you. Gabriel shockers, 12-inch off-road brakes, and a heavy-duty twin-shock suspension help maintain a safe, smooth ride along the way. These combined features also make the Off Grid easier to tow than most.

Elektro Frosch’s Moto-Glamping Tricycle Might Be the World’s Greenest Camper

In the world of RV’ing, bigger is often perceived as better: More amenities, more tech conveniences, more room to spread out. One German company is bucking the trend with a so-called “moto-glamper” that might be the world’s greenest — and smallest — vehicle camper.

Berlin-based Elektro Frosch (which translates to “electric frog”) takes a decidedly different approach to car camping. Its all-in-one tuk-tuk camper combines the rugged adventurousness of motorcycle camping with the green sensibilities of an electric-assist pedal bike. The two-piece camper consists of the electric-powered tricycle and a miniature truck bed that together make up a complete, if minimal, camping setup.

Yes, You Can Take Your Whole Family on an Overlanding Trip
overlanding with family

Overlanding with a family, especially with teenagers, is not as difficult as it sounds. A bit of preparation and some creativity on the go will make the adventure a great way to bond with your loved ones.

Camping for a weekend a few hours away from home is something most families have already experienced. When the kids are little, they enjoy sleeping in the tent and eating s’mores around the bonfire. But going on a longer adventure, far from home, with little to no cell service, may seem a bit more difficult to sell to teenagers.
Get Them to Dream
To be sure that everybody will be on board, it’s best to frame the trip as an epic adventure. Everybody will agree easily to spend time away from home and friends if the goal is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Cross-country trips like exploring the United States Continental Divide are a perfect example of a big adventure that you can achieve with your family. Crossing the U.S. from Mexico to Canada is something you can be proud of, and this project will most certainly be an appealing challenge for any member of the family. No need to worry about the maps and the planning. You can just download the proven route from GPS Kevin’s website. Once uploaded on a GPS device, the 3,000-mile track will be easy to follow, which will give a certain level of confidence to even less experienced explorers.
