The Best Cast Iron Camping Cookware

Finex/Instagram

Fall is officially here. It’s the season of flannel, pumpkin-spiced Spam, and campfire cookin’. The first two are straightforward, but cooking over an open flame in the woods isn’t everyone’s specialty. Aside from fire and beer, the next crucial thing you’ll need is a proper pan. For that, there’s nothing better than good old cast iron. Here are five of the best cast iron pans for campfire cooking and beyond.

If you’re new to the cast iron game, there’s no shame. For the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way to get started, there’s no better option than VonShef’s 3-Piece Cast Iron Skillet Set. The well-reviewed trio is proof that decent cast iron needn’t be expensive. As the name implies, the set includes three nesting skillets in 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch varieties — all for less than the price of a single name-brand alternative. The set comes pre-seasoned with a nonstick coating, so it’s ready to fire right out of the box. Just make sure to maintain that coating with regular seasonings and the entire set will likely outlast you.

Three clever features that cater to clumsier camp chefs are on offer; a flared rim for drip-free pouring, oversized handles on both ends, and a well-balanced design that weighs just 5.2 pounds for easier handling around an open flame.

Second only to Finex, Staub’s extensive catalog includes enameled cookware that’s all the rage these days. The 12-Inch Cast Iron Frying Pan is available in seven colors (like Cherry and Burnt Orange) in case you appreciate a little flare over the campfire. Beyond its pretty looks, however, the pan’s enameled black matte interior is textured to help promote browning on just about any dish. The result is more even cooking and food that just tastes better. The pan’s shallow, curved sides also make flipping pancakes, omelets, and burgers a snap.

Camping sure does require a lot of “stuff.” Even the most bare-bones backcountry setup means packing all the essentials, such as clothing, toiletries, food, water, sleep gear, a first aid kit, fire-building sundries ... and the list goes on. If you’ve tried out camping, you'd know this.

Car campers, and even “soft” campers (i.e. those who aren’t into roughing it), know that it's important to bring the basic camping gear, such as a warm sleeping bag, a comfortable sleeping pad or air mattress, and maybe plenty of beer. You should have a mental or handwritten checklist of everything you'll need for a weekend away.

If you've ever fallen foul of dirty water, you'll know exactly how valuable a quality portable water filter truly is. If you've not, then congratulations, but it's time to get your filtration system sorted before you do. The dangers of dirty water are widely recognized — harmful germs and pathogens can cause serious illnesses — and as outdoorsmen, proper hydration key to our safety on the trail. We need to know that the water we're drinking is clean and safe.

Unless you're built like the Hulk or just plain love suffering, then you're not going to want to haul all the water you need for multiple days on a hike. Remember, every liter of water weighs 2.2 pounds, and with hikers needing at least a liter of water every 2 hours, this starts to rack up quickly. Instead, take one of these portable water filters next time you're out thru-hiking or headed to the campsite with your family. That way, you'll have all the clean drinking water you need without the excess weight.

If you love the outdoors, there’s hardly a better way to spend your time than escaping into nature for a long weekend or week of camping. Most modern camping gear — from backpacks to the best camping tents and rugged hiking boots — will get the job done without forcing you to spend a fortune. But, figuring out the ideal camp sleep system in the front or backcountry can be a bit more challenging.

Some of us are blessed with a knack for sleeping almost anywhere. Unless you’re Survivorman Les Stroud, however, you probably appreciate some semblance of a pillow and something warm to throw over yourself (e.g., a warm sleeping bag or versatile camping quilt). Most of us also need something reasonably comfortable to sleep on. In most cases, especially if you’re camping in the backcountry where weight is an issue, a solid camping sleep pad will do. But if you’re car camping (where gear weight doesn’t matter) or you can’t sleep soundly on anything but a plush sleep surface, a portable air mattress is the next best thing to your bed at home.
